4344 (Capt.) Stuart Crawford Ross
November 23, 1936 – November 12, 2010
Stuart grew up in Southampton, England with his sister Razia during WWII. He remembered vividly them both being sent unaccompanied to Scotland, nametags slung around their necks, to escape the dangers of bombing raids in Southern England. After the war, the family sailed to Canada and settled in Montreal. He attended Collège militaire royal de St Jean (1957), Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston (1959), and University of Toronto where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering (1960). He was on the swim team at CMR and RMC.
He had two families, one with Carol (Mike and Andy) one with Andrée Lortie (Jean François). Mike is an archaeologist living in Terrace, BC. Andy is an ex-cadet (18406, Class of ’92) and served as a Signals Officer with 1PPCLI in the early/mid 90’s. He stayed in Calgary when he got out and has his own eBusiness consulting company. Jean Francois is a soldier with 1R22eR and a proud veteran of an Afghanistan tour. Stuart’s sister, Razia, settled in Australia.
In the CF, Stuart served with the RCE as a Combat Engineering officer. He was with 4 Field Sqn. in cold war Germany. Later he and a classmate, the late Peter Glasheen, were posted to Government House as aides-de-camp to Governor General Georges Vanier, Stuart was deeply impressed by the Vanier family.
After 4 years in the Army, Stuart began a career in education. He worked for a time in the residential settings of the Browns camps for disturbed teenagers. This led him to advanced studies in psychology at the University of Chicago. He then worked at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario where he headed up the Behavioural Studies Department. He moved on to Algonquin College in Ottawa where he headed up the Technology and Trades Department. He then became President of Westerra Institute of Technology in Edmonton (now part of NAIT). He retired to live in Ottawa.
He loved sailing, soccer, vacationing with his extended family and grandchildren in hot and sunny places, and his dog Wills. May he rest in peace.
4328 (Rev. Canon) Chris Carr
