Kingston, Ont. (December 22, 2020) – The Paladins are proud to announce that 49 student-athletes at the Royal Military College of Canada have earned Academic All-Star status for the 2019-20 school year.

Varsity athletes who achieve a GPA of 80% or higher during the previous academic year and play in U SPORTS competition earn the title of Academic All-Canadians, while those whose competitions do not fall under the U SPORTS banner earn OUA Academic Achievement awards. All varsity athletes who achieve this high standard are named Academic All-Stars at the College.
Achieving such a high academic standing can be a challenge for student-athletes at any institution, which makes the accomplishments of RMC’s recipients, who also have additional military duties on top of their studies and athletics, even more remarkable.
“I’m continually impressed by what our student-athletes accomplish in the classroom,” RMC Director of Athletics Darren Cates said. “Our student-athletes constantly rise to the challenges of, and succeed in, all aspects of university life. Especially this year, when we don’t have their athletic accomplishments to celebrate, I’m glad to see so many of our student-athletes are once again being honoured as Academic All-Stars.”
This year, the Paladins can also celebrate a handful of 2020 graduates who earned Academic All-Canadian status in all of their four years at the College. Deserving of a special shoutout, RMC’s newest four-time Academic All-Stars are:
Andrea Banks – women’s volleyball
Michelle Evans – women’s soccer
Thomas Jung – men’s soccer
Internal to RMC, women’s volleyball middle Emerrie Geddes won the Jack C. Sargant Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a varsity athlete who demonstrates combined proficiency in academic standing, sportsmanship, leadership, and athletic ability.
Breaking the 2019-20 Academic All-Stars down by team, men’s rugby led the Paladins with 13 recipients, followed closely by fencing with 11.
In total, 31 of last year’s recipients were in the faculty of arts, while 13 were in engineering. Four science students and one Aboriginal Leadership Opportunity Year (ALOY) student round out RMC’s high-achieving athletes.
