What is a Governor in Council Appointment?
A Governor in Council (GIC) appointment is one made by the Governor General, on the advice of the Queen’s Privy Council of Canada (i.e., the Cabinet). The appointments are made through an Order in Council (OIC) and range from heads of agencies and chief executive officers of Crown corporations to members of quasi-judicial tribunals.
To apply for GIC opportunity, you’ll need to create a GIC account online. Once you’ve created your account, you’ll be able to apply to opportunities when they’re posted online.

What is a Ministerial Appointment?
Ministerial appointments are appointments made under the authority of a Minister that do not require the approval of the Governor in Council. A Minister’s authority to make ministerial appointments may come from a variety of sources, including federal and provincial legislation, federal/provincial/territorial and international agreements, and the documents that create, continue or establish an organization.

Les nominations par le gouverneur en conseil (GC) sont faites par le gouverneur général, sur la recommandation du Conseil privé de la Reine pour le Canada (c.-à-d. du Cabinet). Les nominations sont faites par décret et vont des dirigeants d’organismes aux premiers dirigeants des sociétés d’État jusqu’aux membres des tribunaux quasi judiciaires.

Nominations par le gouverneur en conseil et nominations ministérielles
Les nominations ministérielles sont des nominations faites par un ministre pour lesquelles l’approbation du gouverneur en conseil n’est pas nécessaire. Le pouvoir du ministre de faire des nominations ministérielles peut provenir de différentes sources, y compris des lois fédérales et provinciales, des accords fédéraux-provinciaux-territoriaux ou internationaux, ou encore des documents de constitution d’une organisation ou des documents qui permettent à une organisation de poursuivre ses activités.
