3D Printed Guns and Far-Right Extremism – New Insights from a Global Terrorism Expert

We spoke to Dr. Yannick Veilleux-Lepage for insights into devices that are “awful but lawful” in the US and how 3D printed weapons appeal to right-wing extremists who wish to “seize the means of political violence.”

An Assistant Professor at Royal Military College of Canada, Dr. Veilleux-Lepage’s research covers terrorism, political violence, and the misuse of emerging technology. He has written on the evolving tactics of extremist groups ranging from vehicle ramming, non-state drone use, Islamic State’s social media strategy, and most recently was published in West Point’s CTC Sentinel Journal. The article, Printing Terror: An Empirical Overview of the Use of 3D-Printed Firearms by Right-Wing Extremists, documents the decade-long growth of 3D printed guns across the globe.

An AI algorithm developed by RMC researchers aims to enhance EV charging efficiency, reduce costs, and stabilize the power grid, facilitating broader EV adoption

https://blockchain.news/news/ai-driven-ev-charging-optimization-efficiency-cost-savings

Electric vehicle (EV) charging is witnessing a transformative shift with the introduction of an innovative AI algorithm designed to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and maintain grid stability. Developed by researchers from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC), this real-time smart solution optimizes charging schedules for large parking facilities, balancing rapid charging with energy availability. This development is set to accelerate the adoption of EVs, a cleaner alternative for lowering emissions and achieving climate objectives, according to NVIDIA Technical Blog.

Vincent Roberge, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at RMC and lead author of the study, highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of optimizing EV charging schedules. “Optimizing the charging schedule of EVs in a smart parking lot impacts consumers, who pay less, and the environment by maximizing electricity use during peak availability,” Roberge stated.

With the increasing popularity of EVs, the availability of charging stations is a critical issue. Efficiently managing the power grid’s demand is crucial, especially in large parking lots where numerous vehicles require simultaneous charging. The AI-powered algorithm addresses this by optimizing schedules based on various factors, including vehicle arrival and departure times, energy demand, electricity costs, and charging rate limits. This approach minimizes costs while preventing grid overloads.

Major (ret’d) Vincent Roberge, Professor and Professional Engineer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). He completed his studies (PhD in 2016, M.A.Sc. in 2011 and B.Eng. in 2005) at RMC in Computer Engineering. From 2006 to 2009, He worked at the 409 Canadian Tactical Fighter Squadron where he was the Operation Maintenance Officer for CF-18 Hornet aircraft.

After graduating high school and Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Renee Hansen wasn’t sure which direction to take in terms of a career, and her father suggested the Army Reserves. “My dad told me to go join the Army Reserves,” she recalled. “I thought that since I was aging out of the cadet program, joining the Reserves would be something to do while I figured my future out.”

Now she is the first woman to hold the prestigious position of top-ranking senior non-commissioned officer with the RCAF. It is something that was never ‘planned’ but became a reality as she sought to expand her knowledge and experience over her 30+ year military career. It is one of many firsts for her – she is returning to Ottawa after being appointed as the first woman to hold the position of Wing CWO at 8 Wing Trenton.

Promoted to her current rank in 2019, she was selected as the Squadron Chief Warrant Officer at 426 Transport Training Squadron at 8 Wing Trenton, followed by a year at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) where she would earn a Certificate in Advanced Military Studies. In July 2022, CWO Hansen was privileged to serve as the 8 Wing Chief Warrant Officer.

Jim Leech RRMC RMC 1968 receives Ontario Chamber’s 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) today announced that Jim Leech, former CEO of the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and Chancellor Emeritus of Queen’s University, has earned its 2024 Ontario Business Achievement Award for Lifetime Achievement. Each year, the Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a businessperson who demonstrates leadership in a particular Ontario industry that has a significant positive impact on the province and beyond.

“Jim Leech’s transformational business and community leadership is a superb example of what the Ontario Chamber celebrates with its Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Daniel Tisch, President and CEO of the OCC. “From his role in the dramatic growth of one of the world’s largest pension plans to his philanthropy and non-partisan public service at Queen’s University, UHN and the MasterCard Foundation and government advisory roles, Jim’s leadership has a long legacy – one that we honour today.”

A distinguished Canadian business leader, military officer and philanthropist, Leech is the former President and CEO of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, renowned for his transformative impact on the pension fund industry. During his tenure at Teachers’, the plan ranked first in the world for investment performance and service to members and eliminated its funding deficit, all to the benefit of Ontario’s 350,000 active and retired teachers as well as provincial taxpayers. As one of the architects of the Canadian pension model, Leech’s counsel continues to be sought by pension practitioners worldwide.

During his decades of service at the UHN Foundation, Leech participated in raising over $2.5 billion to enhance medical research in Ontario. At Queen’s University, he served almost 30 years in governance roles, culminating in over two terms as Chancellor. As Chair of the Mastercard Foundation, he oversaw transformative investments in the livelihoods of youth in Africa and in Canada’s First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities.

The Jim Leech MBA Scholarship has given deserving students the opportunity of an advanced business education and through the Jim Leech Mastercard Foundation Fellowship, he has allowed students and recent graduates in Africa to develop entrepreneurial skills and build their own ventures.

Leech’s many advisory roles include assignments with successive Ontario governments concerning restructuring pensions and operational effectiveness, and advising the Prime Minister of Canada on creating the Canada Infrastructure Bank. Leech’s commitment to education, exemplified by his tenure at Queen’s University and co-authorship of The Third Rail: Confronting Our Pension Failures, underscores his dedication to fostering financial literacy and sustainable pension solutions.

“I want to thank OCC for this tremendous honour which I share with the many talented colleagues, friends and family who have supported me over so many years. I am fortunate that every endeavour and challenge I have undertaken in my lifetime has led to personal growth and so much enjoyment.” said Leech. “It is particularly gratifying to be so recognized by the Ontario Chamber which has been an indispensable partner for businesses for over a century. Their continuing advocacy is essential for the prosperity of our province.”.

The Ontario Business Achievement Awards (OBAAs) is one of the most distinguished industry celebrations recognizing business success in the province. The televised Lifetime Achievement Award episode will celebrate Leech’s inspiring 45-year military and business career and his leadership in the charitable and not-for-profit sectors.
