The National Institute for Genealogical Studies offers an advanced web-based course for family historians and professional genealogists in Canadian military records in which students cover the Royal Military Colleges of Canada records; medals and additional published sources. The course is offered as a component of the Canadian Certificate in Genealogical Studies. Military records constitute a major source of genealogical material in Canada. Emphasis will be on the correlation between personnel records, land transactions and nominal roles from the period of New France to the Korean Conflict. At the end of this course, students will be able to search for their ancestor from a nominal role to the land acquisition or pension from various records groups located at the National Archives or the provincial archives (including records of those who fought against the government of the day). Students use other sources such as medal registers, battalion histories, militia pay lists, etc. to help them build a better genealogy.
