Sports Review Process Moving Along on Schedule. Should be Wrapped Up by Early May

In December 2009, the Commandant of RMC, Commodore William Truelove convened a committee to review the orientation of the present varsity sports program and make specific recommendations on the future direction of the program.

The committee was comprised of a cross-section of people representing the diversity of RMC, so that a variety of views and perspectives were included in the review. This committee met over a period of five months and delivered their final report to the Commandant in May 2010.

The committee reconfirmed that the varsity program is beneficial to RMC and the Canadian Forces and provides important added value to the College. However, the committee also recommended a number of changes be made to improve the varsity program. These include a renewed commitment to compete at the university level, modifications in the funding practices of the Athletic Department, a more comprehensive annual review of the varsity programs as well as greater coordination of programs with RMC St Jean.

In order to holistically capitalize on the work the committee completed further detailed information is required. Thus, over the next few months additional data and input will be collected to validate and refine the conclusions and recommendations put forth by the committee.

This information will be presented to a reconstituted Athletic Component Advisory Council (ACAC) chaired by LCol Susan Wigg, RMCC Director of Cadets and will be used to decide the composition of the varsity program for the 2011/12 season.

Currently, the RMC varsity program consists of eleven teams and involves upwards of 220 Officer-Cadets in any given year. Teams include; Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Fencing, Hockey, Rugby, Tae Kwon Do and Running.

We should know by early May what, if any, major changes are made to the varsity sports program.
