RMC SAINT-JEAN FENCING TAKES ALBANY COMPETITION BY FORCE

On Saturday October 20th, the Royal Military College Saint-Jean (RMC Saint-Jean) Fencing team travelled to Albany, New York, to compete in the Renesselaer Polytechnic Institute’s regional fencing tournament. The team – composed of three senior Officer Cadets, around 20 junior Officer Cadets, and two coaches – placed very well for a team with almost no experience. Four of the top eight competitors were from RMC Saint-Jean ; Officer Cadet Xavier Seguin in 8th, Officer Cadet Liam Bell in 7th, Navel Cadet Alexandre Ducharme in 3rd, and Officer Cadet Thomas Foster in 1st place, winning the novice category of the competition. Officer Cadet Harrison Kelertas places 5th overall in the open category, having previous experience in foil. With the exception of one Officer Cadet, all junior members had never fenced with a foil before. Of course, all team members enjoyed the taste of competition
The team began training early September, with two-hour practices twice a week. After learning and mastering the basic concepts such as moving, attacking, and parrying, the team began practicing bouts against one another. The fights were organised as if starting a competition; small pools of five or six fencers, who would eventually all fight one another. The team had no difficulty understanding the pool system of the competition in New York, and began with confidence. Many members won four or five out of five of their pool fights at the beginning of the competition. At the end of the pooled rounds, Navel Cadet Alexandre Ducharme led the leader board at 1st place, and did not change rankings until the semi-finals. About half of the competitors were from RMC Saint-Jean, the other half represented by Americans from the region. All of the civilians in the novice category had roughly the same amount of experience as those from RMC Saint-Jean– none had fenced before September of this year.
Sports competitions, such as this fencing competition in Albany, play an important role in the Military Colleges of Canada. One of the pillars of the Colleges is athleticism, and civilian competitions push Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC) and RMC Saint-Jean Officer Cadets to train hard and develop their skills in order to perform well. These fitness skills learned from sports will then help them with their future military careers as officers in the Canadian Forces. Already, the Officer Cadets of the military colleges have much physical training, in the form of squadron fitness activities, gym classes, or personal work-outs. Currently, the fencing team has put away its foils, has begun training épée, and is preparing for its next competition later in the year.

Soirés spectacle – 60 ans d’histoire du CMR Saint-Jean 1952-2012
Dans le cadre des célébrations du 60e anniversaire du Collège, le CMRSJ organise une soirée-spectacle à saveur commémorative et historique, à l’intention des anciens membres de la communauté du Collège et des élèves-officiers actuels. Le spectacle, entièrement gratuit, comportera six (6) tableaux historiques joués par les élofs qui reviendront sur de grands moments de l’histoire du Collège, depuis son ouverture en 1952 jusqu’à sa réouverture en 2008.
Les tableaux seront précédés et suivis de courts témoignages d’anciens membres de la communauté du collège. À cette occasion le commandant remettra également une mention élogieuse aux nouveaux membres du club quart de siècle. Le spectacle sera précédé d’une réception au Dextraze pour amorcer les retrouvailles.

Evening show – 60 Years of RMC Saint-Jean History: 1952-2012
RMC Saint-Jean is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year with a series of special events. As part of these celebrations, this evening show is dedicated to alumni and former members of the community as well as current OCdts. The show, entirely free, will offer a historical performance by officer-cadets recapitulating great moments in RMC Saint-Jean’s history with 6 short historical sketches, from its inauguration in 1952 to its reopening in 2008.
Each historical sketch will be preceded or followed by testimonies by Alumni and former members of the community. The soirée shall also be the occasion for the commandant to deliver an Honourable Mention to the new members of the Club Quart de Siècle. The evening show will be preceded by a reception held at the Dextraze.

CMR SAINT-JEAN – GALA LEADERSHIP 60 – INVITATION À TOUS
Le Gala Leadership 60 a pour mission de recueillir des fonds pour la Fondation des Anciens du Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean ainsi que pour la Fondation du Club des Collèges militaires royaux du Canada. Pour faire suite au préavis qui vous est parvenu en juin dernier, voici les informations complémentaires.
Initialement prévu pour le 13 novembre, le Gala a été déplacé au 20 novembre pour accommoder l’horaire du Ministre de la Défense nationale, l’honorable Peter G. MacKay qui désire participer à l’évènement.
Seront également présents Monsieur Geoff Molson, président du Club de Hockey des Canadiens de Montréal, qui sera notre président d’honneur, ainsi que 7860 le LGen (ret) Sénateur Roméo Dallaire. Le Gala sera également honoré de la présence de 9982 Mgr Christian Lépine, Archevêque de Montréal. L’évènement rassemblera plusieurs personnalités de la région, des dignitaires des milieux militaires et gouvernementaux ainsi que d’anciens et actuels élèves-officiers.

RMC SAINT-JEAN – GALA LEADERSHIP 60 – INVITATION TO ALL
The mission of the Gala Leadership 60 is to collect funds for the Royal Military Colleges Club of Canada Foundation as well as the Fondation des Anciens du Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean. To follow up on the advance notice forwarded last June, here are the final details.
Originally scheduled for November 13th, the Gala has been moved to November 20th to accommodate the schedule of the Minister of National Defense, the honourable Peter G. MacKay, who wishes to attend the function.
Also attending are Mr. Geoffrey E. Molson, President and CEO of the Montréal Canadiens, as Honorary President, and 7860 LGen (ret) Sénator Roméo Dallaire. The Gala will also be honoured by the presence of 9982 Mgr Christian Lépine, Archbishop of Montréal. The event will also gather local celebrities, military and government dignitaries, as well as current and past Cadets.

Le CMR Saint-Jean célèbre le 60e anniversaire de sa fondation

Fondé en 1952, le Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean (CMR Saint-Jean) fête cette année le 60e anniversaire de sa fondation. Un survol de CF-18 et de CF-146 (hélicoptères Griffons) à basse altitude au dessus du CMR Saint-Jean et de la ville de Saint-Jean est prévu le 13 novembre entre 12 h et 13 h pour marquer cet anniversaire. La cérémonie d’ouverture officielle du Collège a eu lieu le 13 novembre 1952 et était présidée par le gouverneur général, Son Excellence le très honorable Vincent Massey, et le ministre de la Défense nationale, l’honorable Brooke Claxton.
Le 60e anniversaire de la fondation du CMR Saint-Jean est célébré lors d’événements tout au long de l’année. En effet, le défilé du droit de cité, la Cérémonie de remise des diplômes, les cérémonies de fin d’année, la fin de semaine des retrouvailles, la soirée spectacle du 3 novembre et le Gala Leadership 60 le 20 novembre ponctuent les célébrations du 60e anniversaire du CMR Saint-Jean.
La mission du CMR Saint-Jean est de préparer les élèves-officiers à une brillante carrière en tant qu’officier des Forces canadiennes par le biais de ses programmes d’études, de leadership, de sport et de bilinguisme.
