Quick update from Shenzhen
By: Darren Cates, Director of Athletics – RMCC
The Universiade has gone quickly and we are into the final few days of competition. The calibre of athletes is extremely high with many olympic and world champions participating. This is the second largest multisports event in the world with 13,000 athletes and coaches. I have had the opportunity to take in everything from archery to waterpolo (24 different sports in all).
The RMC contingent has been visible and busy! As Transportation Manager I am responsible to get our 354 athletes and coaches to their practices and competitions on time. Sounds easy but it isn’t in a city of 14 million people! I am now an expert on the Shenzhen roadways, subway, and bus system! Steve Leknois (RMC Men’s Volleyball Coach) is an assistant with the Canadian Men’s Volleyball team and they went a perfect 4-0 in round robin, defeated Korea in the quarter-finals and lost a tough 4 set match in the semis to the Ukraine. They are now playing for the bronze medal on Monday vs Brazil.
Joel Ridley (RMC tae kwon do Coach) is a Coach with the Canadian Tae Kwon Do team. Their competition started on Aug 20 and they had two fighters in action, both of whom lost in the quarter finals. OCdt Jason Song fights his first match on Monday, August 22. Joel has also become one of Canada’s top supporters attending many Canadian events. Overall Canada has won 3 silvers and 3 bronze medals. China has won 100 and is leading the medal table (not a big surprise).
This has been an experience of a lifetime and I have learned a tremendous amount. I can’t wait to bring my experiences back to RMC.

Canadian Forces need more teeth: Transition chief
“Whether under our control or not, transformation will occur; the times are changing, and we have to change with them,” he writes. “If we don’t, the history of previous transformation efforts shows that our front line output will suffer while the overhead continues to grow. Canadians deserve better.”

Military clock turned back to the past
One example I saw as minister of defence in the Pearson government was a memorandum prepared by the RCAF when lobbying for the Argus aircraft for maritime patrol. At the top of the “secret” document was written, “This is our chance to screw the navy.”
Paul Hellyer was minister of national defence from April 1963 to September 1967.
