JOHN PETER van HAASTRECHT, JR. Peacefully entered into eternal rest at Hospice of Charleston, on Thursday, January 8, 2015, John Peter van Haastrecht, Jr., Bolton, Ontario in his 72nd year, beloved husband for 46 years of his loving wife Elizabeth “Beth” Bryan van Haastrecht, of Bolton, and Edisto Beach, South Carolina. Loving father of John (Katrina) van Haastrecht, III, North Augusta, South Carolina; Trina (Kent) Turberville, James Island, South Carolina. Cherished grandfather of Taylor, Bailey, Chance and Madison van Haastrecht; Bryce and Lucius Turberville. Dear sister of Betty Aldridge, Ottawa, Ontario; Peter (Linda) van Haastrecht, Trenton, Ontario ; brothers-in-law, Arthur Bryan, Augusta, Georgia; David (Linda) Bryan, Lexington, South Carolina; Bill (Ann) Bryan and a sister-in-law, Marie (Tom) Martin, all of North Augusta, South Carolina. He was predeceased by brother-in-law, Dick Aldridge and sister-in-law, Beth Bryan. John was born on June 14, 1943, in the Netherlands, a son of the late Elisabeth and John Peter van Haastrecht, Sr. He graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario with a Bachelor of Science degree and served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Upon retiring from the military, he entered into real estate development where he excelled with A.E. LePage, Kelley and Associates, and was President of Campeau Corporation. He started Devan Properties which was later bought out by Morguard REIT where he was CEO and then went independent with his own company Vanreal Ltd.

In addition to his business activities, John served on the board of the Royal Military College Foundation and was a past President; he was a member of the Board and the Audit Committee of Partners Real Estate Investment Trust and member of Board of North America Development Ltd. He recently attained the designation of Chartered Director from the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University.

John was presented the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Minister of National Defense, Hon Peter MacKay (photo left) for being a leading donator and booster of the Royal Military College. John was a man who worked hard, loved his family, loved to travel with his grandchildren and wife. He was always up to accepting a challenge whether it was marathon bike rides or climbing Mt. Shasta to raise money for his college. He enjoyed a good glass of wine and conversation and was always open minded to all points of view. He was extremely giving and very supportive of his community.

The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) Tuesday evening 5 – 7 o’clock. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, January 14 at 3 o’clock. Interment Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bolton. Family will receive family and friends after the burial at a reception at Glen Eagle Golf Club, 15731 Peel Regional Road 50, Bolton L7E 3H9.

Peacefully at home, at the age of 77, on January 3, 2015, Jim died in the arms of his loving wife of 54 years, Sandra. He will be sorely missed by his sons James (Karen) and Peter (Jodie) and his grandchildren James, Bethany, Emily and Allison. An engineer, Jim enjoyed a full naval career, then was a consultant with CFN. He was an active amateur radio enthusiast, holding positions at local, national and international levels. His many interests leave a wide circle of friends who, along with his family, will sadly miss this kind and honourable man. A heartfelt thank you to all who have stood by us through his illness. A memorial service and reception will be held at Bell’s Corners United Church, 3955 Old Richmond Road, on Saturday, January 17 at 2 pm.

HENDERSON, Stephen Joseph – It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Stephen Joseph Henderson on January 7, 2015 at the age of 56. Lover of all sports especially hockey, ball and weight training. He spent his later year reffing the game he loved enabling him to continue being on the ice with his friends.

Employed at the Department of Nation Defence for over 35 years. Born and raised in Kingston, Ontario on October 13, 1958. Son of the late Herbert Joseph and Charlotte (nee Joyce) Henderson. He leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend Sandy (nee Murano), his sons Taylor Joseph Henderson, Brandon Kyle (Kara) Henderson and Nicholas G. Murano. Stephen was fortunate to have two wonderful grandchildren who he adored and was very proud of; Stephen Joseph “Little Steve” and Hailey Rose “Princess” Henderson. Brother to Barry, Terry, Chris, Mark (Pat). Also brother to Raymond (Pat) and Brian (Donna) on his mother’s side. Brother-in-law to Pat (Linda), Mario (Pina), Rosa (Noe) and Angela (Angelo). Much loved uncle to many and friend to all.

Thank you to Dr. James Beliveau, family physician, for your compassion, support and great sense of humour. Also thank you to Dr. Sean Taylor, ALS specialist, for your assistance during a very difficult journey. Family and friends will be received at the GORDON F. TOMPKINS FUNERAL HOME – TOWNSHIP CHAPEL 435 Davis Drive (Taylor Kidd Blvd. & Centennial Drive) on Saturday, January 10, 2015 from 1-3 & 6-9 p.m. Cremation to follow at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens. Extra Note: Many of our readers may recognize Steve as a former first-rate hockey referee at Constantine Arena; his brother, Terry, is a familiar face around RMCC delivering the internal college mail, always spreading cheer and every year picking the wrong team(s) playing for the Stanley Cup.
