Obituary for Robert (Bob), Major Parent – Former RMC Professor

(Father of Rob Parent former and popular RMC hockey assistant coach and head rugby coach at RMC)

bp02.jpgMajor (Retired) Bob “Boomer” Parent RCE passed away suddenly at home on 23 September 2008. He had been in failing health but had left hospital in order to be with his family and friends during his last days.Major Bob Parent arrived at RMC to begin work as a professor within the Civil Engineering Department in December 1966. A veteran of Korea, a graduate of the Long Survey Course in the UK and Masters Programme at the University of New Brunswick he had also served in the RCE Mapping and Charting Establishment and spent many summers in Canada’s north breaking trail and running survey lines through virgin forest. This wealth of practical experience along with his academic background made him an ideal addition to the RMC faculty and set the stage for molding a generation of young Sapper cadets who were to come to enjoy the many pleasures of his annual survey camp. Bob left the military in 1972 but maintained his old school style of instruction at RMC for another 20 years earning the grudging admiration and appreciation of his students as well as the moniker “Boomer”. Bob retired from RMC in 1992 kept busy playing competitive bridge (reaching the Masters level) and cheering for his beloved Canadiens right up until his final days.

Along with his wife Shirley Boomer is survived by two sons, Robert and Michael and two daughters Karen and Margot, as well as his eight beloved grandchildren.
