From Mackenzie Building to Panet House
Following is a copy of the e-mail sent out by Rod McDonald on his last day in the Canadian Forces (30 November) and one day prior to taking up his new position as the executive Vice-President, RMC Club of Canada Foundation.

Ladies and gentlemen,
I am signing off as the Registrar effective today and retiring from the Canadian Forces after 35 years. The last 71/2 years have been here at RMC, the first four as the Deputy Director of Cadets, and the last 31/2 as Registrar. It was my intention to come to RMC in 2003 to work with the Cadets and round out my career in this academic institution. To say that it has been an absolute highlight of my career is a monumental understatement. The reason for that is because of you, the staff and students of this storied institution, whom I have had the pleasure of working with and for. I couldn’t begin to list the numerous people who have been instrumental in making this time in my career so enjoyable, but I can say that everyone played a part due to the environment you have created that we work in day to day.
RMC, as a military unit and academic institution walks a very fine line between the two entities. Many people do not fully realize the complexities of either one, let alone the challenges of combining the two. You, as a whole, manage to keep RMC running due to hard work and dedication in cyclical times of fiscal challenges, and in most cases, under-staffing. Notwithstanding RMC continues to grow in reputation and prominence.
As I hover off into the sunset, my chopper will be landing just across the Parade Square at Panet House where tomorrow I will take up the position of Executive Vice-President of the RMC Club of Canada Foundation. I will have the distinct pleasure of continuing to work with all of you, and in particular the Cadets, to make a difference here at RMC.
Thank you one and all for the support you have provide to me and to my staff as Registrar. I trust that you will continue this excellent relationship with my replacement.

Messieurs, Mesdames
À partir d’aujourd’hui, je démissionne de mon poste de secrétaire général car je prends ma retraite des Forces canadiennes après trente-cinq ans. Pendant les sept dernières années et demie, j’ai travaillé ici au Collège militaire royal du Canada : les quatre premières années en tant que directeur des élèves-officiers et ensuite, pendant trois ans et demie, en tant que Secrétaire général. En 2003, j’avais l’intention de travailler au sein du Collège avec les élèves-officiers pour que ma carrière tire éventuellement à sa fin dans cette institution académique. De vous dire que ceci fut le point culminant de ma carrière, c’est bien le moins qu’on puisse dire ! Je me sens si privilégié d’avoir eu l’opportunité et le plaisir de travailler avec les membres du personnel et les étudiant(e)s de cette illustre institution.
Si je devais remercier toutes les personnes qui ont contribué à ce chapitre très positif de ma carrière ce message serait sans fin. Je peux toutefois affirmer que vous avez tous et toutes contribués à cet environnement positif dans lequel nous travaillons.
Comme unité militaire et comme institution universitaire, le Collège militaire royal du Canada exige une relation qui demande une certaine diplomatie. Personne ne se rend compte des enjeux que l’on côtoie chaque jour afin de combiner harmonieusement les deux. Vous avez toujours réussi à travailler et à garder un esprit d’équipe, même lors des défis cycliques et, dans la plupart du temps, avec peu de ressources. Néanmoins, le CMRC continue à garder une excellente réputation et à occuper le devant de la scène nationale et internationale.
Au coucher du soleil de ma carrière militaire, mon hélicoptère atterrira de l’autre côté du terrain de parade à « Panet House » où demain j’occuperai le poste de vice-président exécutif de la Fondation CMR. Ma contribution au Collège ne n’arrêtera pas pour autant car j’aurai toujours le plaisir de continuer à travailler avec vous et, en particulier, avec les élèves-officiers.
Je tiens à vous remercier tous et toutes de la confiance que vous avez accordé à mon cabinet ainsi qu’à moi en tant que Secrétaire général. J’ai confiance que vous continuerez à témoigner un excellent rapport avec mon successeur.
