“In the early 1960s young men aged 16 to 19 from across the country, who wished to volunteer for officer training in the army, navy, or air force, were selected following a rigorous screening process and sent to one of Canada’s three military colleges: RMC, CMR, and Royal Roads near Victoria, British Columbia. In addition to undergoing a very demanding training regimen, those attending Canadian Service College Royal Roads had the unique experience of being the lowest of the low in their first and the highest of the high, the cadets in charge, in their second year.
This book covers one academic year and although a work of fiction, incredible as some of the stories may seem, all of the anecdotes in this book are fundamentally true. They convey the shock for the new boys at being thrust into a rigid system that gave them virtually no privacy and harassed them almost 24 hours a day and the struggles of the second year boys to adapt to their position of power. The result was a step towards manhood that none of the cadets would ever forget.”

Later in life, feeling unfulfilled in her post-military career, she realized that finding her true path forward meant she had to go back to the beginning and reclaim the truth of what she had experienced all those years ago.
Kate Armstrong worked as a military officer and an electricity trader, before realizing it wasn’t her dream and becoming a writer. She lives in Nelson, B.C.”
Mechanical Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada 1876-2018
“The Cordite Foundation has just published a new book, Mechanical Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada 1876-2018.
The book is a historical perspective on the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the Royal Military College of Canada, including its students, its staff and its programs. In addition to Mechanical Engineering the book also covers the Engineering and Management Program and the Aeronautical Engineering Program that were/are offered at RMC. The book features the annual class photographs of the departments’ graduates covering each of the three degree disciplines, starting from 1952. It also includes photos and brief descriptions of most of the professors, technicians and departmental administrative staff.
Each chapter of the book covers a period of significance to the development of RMC and the department. Each provides a resumé of significant world events, Canadian political events, developments in the Canadian Forces and advances in technology that occurred in the period covered by the chapter. The chapters then go on to explain how the department and its programs evolved, as influenced by those contexts. The authors, Michael Bardon, Pierre Bussières, Kristin Hadfield, Graham Lindsay and Craig Moffatt, have brought to the book their experiences and perspectives as students, researchers, professors, department heads and deans.
Even if you have no direct affiliation with the department, the book still provides an interesting description of the development of technology, engineering and engineering education in Canada, as well as infrastructure changes at RMC, from before the College was created until the present.”

« La Fondation Cordite vient de publier un nouveau livre, Le génie mécanique au Collège militaire royal du Canada, 1876-2018. Les versions anglaise et française du livre sont en vente à la boutique du Club des anciens.
Le livre propose une histoire du Département de génie mécanique et génie aérospatial du Collège militaire royal du Canada, de ses étudiants, son personnel et ses programmes. En plus de faire l’histoire du génie mécanique, le livre comprend aussi celle des programmes de génie et gestion et de génie aéronautique au Collège. Beaucoup de photographies d’archives y sont reproduites, ainsi que toutes les photographies des classes de finissants avec leurs professeurs pour les trois programmes à partir de 1952 jusqu’à 2018. Il comprend également des photos et de quelques informations sur la plupart des professeurs (1876-2018), des techniciens et des membres du personnel administratif du département (1952-2018).
Chaque chapitre du livre traite d’une période importante dans le développement du Collège. Chacun fournit un résumé des événements mondiaux importants, des événements politiques canadiens, des développements dans les Forces canadiennes et des progrès technologiques survenus au cours de l’ère considérée dans le chapitre. Les chapitres expliquent ensuite comment le département et ses programmes ont évolué, influencés par ces contextes. Les auteurs, Michael Bardon, Pierre Bussières, Kristin Hadfield, Graham Lindsay et Craig Moffatt, ont apporté à ce livre, selon le cas, leurs expériences et perspectives en tant qu’étudiants, chercheurs, professeurs, directeurs de département et doyens.
