Des ponts de bois qui résistent bien à la charge!

Le samedi 17 avril dernier, les élèves-officiers du Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean (CMR Saint-Jean) ont mis à l’essai leurs ponts fabriqués en bâtons de bois au concours Génie Civilisé 2010 de l’Université de Sherbrooke (au Québec).
Sous la supervision du directeur du département des sciences de la nature, le professeur Frédéric Jetzer, les deux groupes d’élèves-officiers ont entrepris la construction de leur pont plusieurs semaines avant la tenue du concours. Pour être éligibles, les ponts devaient être construits selon des spécifications techniques précises, notamment ils devaient avoir entre 90 et 100 centimètres de longueur, 50 centimètres de hauteur et leur masse ne devaient pas dépasser 1.5 kg. Les deux équipes ont construit leur pont uniquement avec de la colle à bois et des bâtons de « popsicle », et avec pour seul outil, un couteau. Composée des Élèves-officiers Micael Coady, Tyler Molloy et Tyler O’Conner, l’équipe du Neandertal a créé un pont de 1152 grammes. La deuxième équipe représentant le CMR Saint-Jean au concours, l’équipe Shrapnel, était composée des Élèves-officiers Jeremy Appolloni, Daniel Carroll, Tyler Dobbie et Jeremy Ricketts. Ces derniers ont créé un pont d’un design plus classique pesant 936 grammes. Les deux équipes ont chacune consacré environ 75 heures de leur temps libre à la conception et à la construction de leur pont.
À la Faculté de Génie de l’Université de Sherbrooke, les élèves-officiers ont dû faire face à une compétition féroce entre les cégeps qui étaient représentés, soit un total de 16 équipes provenant d’un peu partout au Québec. Ces équipes se disputaient deux prix : celui de la meilleure structure et celui de la meilleure esthétique. Chaque structure a été soumise à un test de résistance afin de déterminer les gagnants. Le pont de l’équipe du Neandertal a soutenu une impressionnante charge de 709 livres, ce qui leur a valu la septième place au classement. Résistant à une charge de 124 livres, le pont de l’équipe Shrapnel a terminé en dixième place au classement. Cependant, l’équipe Sharpnel a remporté le prix de la meilleure esthétique qui était décerné par le public. « Participer à ce concours est une très belle expérience; c’est vraiment bien de voir ce que les étudiants des autres cégeps ont fait », a déclaré l’Élève-officier Appolloni après avoir reçu le prix de la meilleure esthétique.

Popsicle-Stick Bridges Take the Weight

On Saturday, April 17, 2010, officer cadets (OCdt) from the Royal Military College of Saint Jean (RMC Saint-Jean) tested out their popsicle-stick bridges at the annual bridge building contest held at the Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec.
Under the direction of Professor Frédérich Jetzer, Head of the Science Department at RMC Saint-Jean, the two groups of officer cadets started the task of building their bridges many weeks before the competition. The bridges had to be between 90 and 100 centimetres in length, 50 centimetres in height and weigh a maximum of 1.5 kg to meet the requirements for the competition. The two teams created their bridges with only wood glue, utility knives and popsicle-sticks. Team Neanderthal, the first RMC Saint-Jean bridge team, whose teammates were OCdt Micael Coady, OCdt Tyler Molloy, and OCdt Tyler O’Conner, created a unique bridge that weighed 1152 grams. The second team, Team Shrapnel, which consisted of OCdt Jeremy Appolloni, OCdt Daniel Carroll, OCdt Tyler Dobbie and OCdt Jeremy Ricketts, built a bridge with a more classical design weighing 936 grams. Both teams took about 75 hours to design and construct their respective bridges during their spare time.
At the Engineering Faculty of the Université de Sherbrooke, the officer cadets were met with stiff competition from the other CEGEPs. There were a total of 16 teams from across Quebec that participated in this event. The teams competed for two prizes. The first was awarded for the bridge that could hold the most weight, and the second was awarded for the bridge’s aesthetics. Each bridge was subjected to a weight-bearing test in order to determine the winner. Team Neanderthal’s bridge held an outstanding 709 lbs, coming up seventh place overall. Team Shrapnel’s bridge came in tenth by holding 124 lbs. However, Team Shrapnel did redeem themselves by winning the Aesthetics Award, which was determined by the public. “It was so great to be a part of this competition, seeing what engineering students from other CEGEPs are bringing to the forefront in this event,” said OCdt Appolloni, after winning the Aesthetic Award.
Overall, the RMC Saint-Jean bridge teams proved to be strong competitors in this event and gained valuable engineering experience.

Dîner d’adieu pour le Commandant du CMR SJ
Le 30 avril, le chapitre du Fort St Jean a organisé deux événements spéciaux. La première était un dîner d’adieu en l’honneur de départ du Commandant du collège militaire royal de St-Jean (CMR SJ), Colonel François Pion. Col Pion était le premier Commandant depuis la réouverture du Collège en 2007. Il prendra sa retraite c’est été, après 35 ans de service en uniform. Les anciens ont bénéficié d’une excellente
relation du travail avec Col Pion, et les deux ont créé un environnement de réussite social et professionnelle.
Nous avons mangé au Vieux Mess où nous avons participé dans le dîner mensuel du Chef – un voyage gastronomique en Italie. Délicieux!
Les anciens ont présenté le Col Pion un cadeau d’adieu : la chaise capitaine du Club des CMR, avec un plaque gravée commémorant son temps que Commandant du collège.

Farewell Luncheon for RMC SJ Commandant
On 30 April 2010, the Fort St Jean Chapter of the RMCs Club hosted two very special events. The first was a Farewell Luncheon to the departing Commandant of RMC SJ, 12603 Col François Pion. Col Pion was the first Commandant of the newly re-opened RMC SJ and has recently announced his retirement this summer. From the beginning Col Pion and the Anciens(nes) have had an excellent working relationship and both sides have benefitted from this liaison. As a Chapter, we have been truly lucky to work with a Commandant as understanding and generous with his time and the college facilities.
The luncheon took place at the Vieux Mess, and we were thrilled to take part in the Chef`s Special, a monthly lunch of international gastronomic delights! On Friday our palates visited Italy and were not disappointed.
As a parting gift, and to show our appreciation, the Anciens presented Col Pion with an RMCs Club Captain`s chair, with an engraved plaque commemorating his service at the College.
