A genuine outpouring of fondness and affection was displayed by a well turned-out crowd, many of them Ex- cadets, college staff, former colleagues and long time family friends, for the retiring RMC Club Executive Director, Peter Dawe, at his retirement BBQ Luncheon on Friday, June 3.
Construction work of a new patio at the rear of the Senior Staff Mess prevented the function to be held outside.
Nevertheless, the air conditioned atmosphere of the SSM and the BBQ ambiance provided a perfect surrounding for the celebration of a very distinguished person and career.
An enjoyable cast of speakers kept the moment light as they paid tribute to Peter’s exemplary dedication and his numerous outstanding accomplishments on behalf of both the Club and the College over many years.
Among those paying tribute were: Commodore Bill Truelove, Steve Lukits, Reg Watts, Chris Carr, Bob Carr, Toivo, Roht, Gilles Langlois, Peter Kirkham, James Dawe – third son of proud parents Peter and Reine. Former College principal Dr John Scott Cowan was the final speaker.
The talks were were all short to the delight of the audience; very well presented, each in their own way captured a unique glimpse of the guest of honour.
Peter closed out this portion of the afternoon. He was visibly touched and delighted and expressed his feelings in his usual classy style.
All those in attendance enjoyed the opportunity to attend and take part in the celebration.

ALOY Exercise gets national media coverage
As the Aboriginal Leadership Opportunity Year (ALOY) cadets began their Final Exercise in Smith’s Falls on Friday, June 3rd, the Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN) was there to video the action.
The ALOY group is currently on a 7 day exercise on the Rideau Canal. As they set up camp on Friday, APTN interviewed staff and cadets about their experience in RMC’s unique program aimed at Aboriginal youth.

The ALOY exercise involves completing a number of leadership related tasks, which of which are on the water. The exercise gives the cadets to put into practice the many military and leadership skills they have learned throughout the year.
The trip will see them breaking camp early morning each day and completing their tasks, which could range from guiding the canoes to setting up observation posts. They will stop each evening and set up camp. The areas where they will be stopping include Newboro Locks, Davis Locks, Sunny Acres, Seeley’s Bay, Lower Brewers Locks, Washburn and Kingston Mills Locks.
The group will arrive back at RMC on Friday, June 10th. Then the following week, Friday, June 17th, the Cadets will have their Graduation Parade at RMC

RMC’s 135th RMCC Anniversary BBQ
Perfect summer like weather was the order of the day when the Annual RMCC staff appreciation Day Bar BQ was held last Tuesday, 31 May. A large turnout of military and civilian staff; combined with a number of cadets who are still involved in various projects over the summer all enjoyed some great food and fellowship.
A surprise announcement by the Commandant, Commodore Bill Truelove that the College Chief Warrant Officer, Tony Slack (pictured centre above) would be leaving “very shortly” for a deployment to Afghanistan. CWO Slack has only been on the staff for a year. He has made quite an impression with all those he has been involved with over that period.
We wish him well.
