The annual RMC ‘cake walk’ was a stage show on St Patrick’s day performed before cadets and staff. An annual spring stage show was a RMC tradition dating from the 1880. The tradition was revived spontaneously on St Patrick’s Day -17 March 1904 when cadets dressed in green paraded around the college. On St. Patrick’s Day 1905, the distribution of a cake as large as a clothes basket was a reward for putting on the stage show.

Typically acts consisted of bands, costumed characters, comedians, athletes, skits, singers and dancers. In 1948, the cake walk tradition was revived at RMC. The cake walk tradition died out at RMC in the 1970s. Jokes, toasts, the celebration of Irish culture and having a good laugh remain part of the RMC tradition when celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. To turn a plain Irish buntd cake into a St. Patty’s Day cake, simply sprinkle with shamrock cake confetti, green sprinkles, sugarcrafted gold nuggets and/or coins that have been rolled in edible gold glitter.
