2014 Expeditions’ Teams Selection
26711 OCdt (II) Joshua Horlings, VP of RMC Expedition Club
The RMCC Expedition Club has begun the selection process for the Expeditions of 2014! Cadets looking to take part in expeditions to Guatemala and Kenya were challenged and evaluated in tasks involving communication, teamwork, leadership and physical strength. Cadets each carried a 40lb rucksack in order to give the challenges a greater physical aspect. As both expeditions will be both mentally and physically strenuous, it is crucial that candidates be able to work well together and push themselves physically.
In order to ensure fairness and the best possible selection, the Club enlisted the help of LCol (Ret’d) Steve Nash. Nash, who has a vast range of experience with selections from his time spent as deputy commander of JTF2 provided valuable expertise. The Club also wishes to thank those who volunteered as evaluators: Craig Palmer, Elizabeth Gibson, Kara Mazerolle, Jessica Van Winden, Jade Dunstan, Phillippe Gauthier, Captain Mike Bezeau, Capt Labonté and Otter Sqn members, OCdts : Buss, Von Hollen, Kolasky, Ryan and Laberge-Leblanc.
The RMCC Expedition Club would also like to thank the RMC Foundation for their great donation of $20,000 that will help support the selected Cadets going to Guatemala and Kenya. In the next article, discover who made it onto a team and what the expeditions will consist of over the next several months.

Rowing Update…
By: 26730 NCdt (II) Matthew D. Mooney
On Friday the 18th of October the RMCC rowing team departed the Kingston campus with high hopes. Hoping their hard work and dedication would pay off, the rowing team traveled to Guelph, Ontario for the Guelph Invitational Rowing Regatta at the local rowing club.
There were seven RMCC boats entered in the regatta. Rowing in singles, doubles, fours and eight’s, the rowing team exploded out of the gates and were able to post some competitive times. Their coaches, Paul Overveld and Sylvian Leblanc, encouraged the team with their friendly smiles and positive attitude. There was no shortage of smiles as boats rowed to the sound of RMC! RMC! RMC! being chanted from the nearest dock.
Singles, raced by OCdt Katherine Sillins, and German exchange student 2Lt Michael Freigang, were in for a wet and wild ride as it began to rain at the beginning of their races. The womens’ and two mens’ fours had a lot of fun in their races and were able to show some RMCC pride as the crossed the finish line with great times all around. The mens’ eight had the fastest overall time for the day but unfortunately was narrowly beaten in the final heat.
More Rowing News…

The RMC Rowing Team’s season came to an end for the majority of the crews this past Friday. Although the Men’s Eight will continue onto Canadian University Finals in Montreal next weekend, the Men’s and Women’s Four competed in their last races of the season at the OUA Development regatta in St. Catharine’s.
Clear skies and choppy water made for an interesting day of racing with mixed results. The Men’s Eight posted the fastest time of the day in heats but suffered a heartbreaking disqualification from finals. The Women’s Four had a similar fate, with technical issues forcing a halt and restart a quarter of the way through the race they could not recover from. While both Junior Varsity Men’s Fours faced stiff competition and did not advance past heats, the Junior Varsity Men’s Double of Lt Freigang (exchange student) and OCdt Tilley (II) pulled hard through the waves to qualify for the finals, where they finished a solid sixth place.
The Novice Men’s Four, composed of NCdt Clow (III), NCdt Williams (III), OCdt Sannes (III), OCdt Clancey (III) and coxswain OCdt Brayman (III), a first-time combination, were the only crew to bring home hardware, delivering a silver medal.
These results were a satisfying end to a season marred by scheduling difficulties and windy and wavy morning forcing the team to practice inside. It is also important to note that over half of the team had never touched an oar before September and learned an entirely new sport in less than a month.
Special thanks go out to club President NCdt Noonan (III) and Vice-President NCdt Naylor (III) as well as Coaches Paul Overvelde and RMC Professor Sylvain Leblanc. Without their dedication and unfaltering hard work behind the scenes, the team never would have pushed off the docks.
The RMCC rowing season can’t end without mentioning once again the generosity of 6604 Capt. (N) (Ret) Dr. Jim Carruthers (Class of ’65) who recently made an extremely generous contribution to the Rowing Club through the Foundation. Thanks to his thoughtfulness and kindness the club was able to purchase a brand new heavyweight four.
Jim Carruthers is the current President of the Foundation and a long time life member of the RMC Club.
