This year’s guest speaker is Dr. Tanya Grodzinski. Her lecture will explore her interests as an historian at RMC, the opportunities created by personal and professional changes, and why
perfectly nice people can sometimes do perfectly awful things. Dr. Tanya Grodzinski is a long-serving historian at RMC, a graduate of the War Studies programme, and a retired Canadian Armed Forces officer with 36 years of service. She has been an integral part of the education of officer cadets and senior officers since 2003 and currently leads Cultural Evolution efforts at the College.

Cette année, la conférencière invitée est Tanya Grodzinski(PhD). Sa conférence portera sur ses intérêts en tant qu’historienne au CMR, sur les opportunités créées par des changements personnels et professionnels, et sur les raisons pour lesquelles des personnes parfaitement gentilles peuvent parfois faire des choses parfaitement horribles. Tanya Grodzinski est une historienne de longue date au CMR, diplômée du programme d’Études sur la conduite de la guerre et officier des Forces armées canadiennes à la retraite après 36 ans de service. Elle fait partie intégrante de la formation des élèves officiers et des officiers supérieurs depuis 2003 et dirige actuellement les efforts d’évolution culturelle au Collège.

Film Background:
“Gino: A Child of War” is an inspiring docu-drama, shedding light on an incredible story of hope and boundless kindness of the human spirit amid the chaos of war. The film narrates the story of Gino Farnetti-Bragaglia, a five-year-old boy discovered frightened, hungry, and wandering amidst the war-tom ruins of Torrice, Italy, in 1944, by compassionate Canadian soldiers. For the next ten months, Gino found shelter, nourishment, and care among his Canadian “guardian angels”. A special bond formed between Gino, Lloyd ‘Red’ Oliver and other Canadian soldiers. This film portrays their remarkable relationship and the untold story that connects them to this day.

“Gino : Un enfant de la guerre”” est un docu-drame (en anglais) inspirant qui met en lumière une incroyable histoire d’espoir et de bonté sans limite de l’esprit humain au milieu du chaos de la guerre. Le film raconte l’histoire de Gino Fametti-Bragaglia, un garçon de cinq ans, effrayé, affamé et errant, trouvé par des soldats canadiens compatissants au milieu des ruines de Torrice (en Italie, en 1944) déchirées par la guerre. Pendant les dix mois qui suivirent, Gino trouva un abri, de la nourriture et des soins auprès de ses « anges gardiens » canadiens. Un lien spécial s’est créé entre Gino, Lloyd « Red » Oliver et d’autres soldats canadiens. Ce film dépeint leur relation remarquable et l’histoire inédite qui les relie à ce jour.
RMC will host the 14th Canadian Military Chess Championship 16-17 March 2024
Chess is considered the oldest military war game still played today, and it enables the development of many essential skills in the military such as analytic thinking, planning, decision making, tactical spirit and perseverance. The Royal Military College (RMC) chess club participates in is a wide range of competitions including an annual match with West Point, the Canadian Military Chess Championship, and the NATO Chess Championship. The Canadian Military Chess Championship serves as a qualifier for the team of 6 players to represent Canada at the NATO Chess Championship, which will be held in Greece in September 2024.
Les échecs sont considérés comme le plus ancien jeu de guerre militaire encore joué aujourd’hui. Ils favorisent l’acquisition de compétences essentielles, telles que la pensée analytique, la planification, la prise de décision, l’esprit tactique et la persévérance. Le club d’échecs du Collège militaire royal du Canada (CMR) participe à un large éventail de compétitions, y compris au match annuel avec West Point, au Championnat militaire d’échecs du Canada et au Championnat d’échecs de l’OTAN. Le Championnat militaire d’échecs du Canada sert de qualification pour l’équipe de six joueurs qui représentera le Canada au Championnat d’échecs de l’OTAN, qui aura lieu en Grèce en septembre 2024.
RMC will host the 14th Canadian Military Chess Championship 16-17 March 2024, to develop participants for the NATO Chess Championship. The 14th Canadian Military Chess Championship at RMC will provide an opportunity to develop overall teamwork, competitive spirit, and College esprit-de-corps. We encourage the RMC community to come show support for our participants subject to their availability.
