RMC Alumni in Ottawa: come out this Saturday to support the Paladins and help fight Breast Cancer
This Saturday, February 14th, the Carleton Ravens (www.goravens.ca) are hosting the Annual Shoot for the Cure Basketball game against the RMC Paladins to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Research. The Carleton Ravens would like to invite all RMC alumni to come out to the double header games and support their team and a great charity at the same time by taking advantage of a special offer to RMC Alumni in the Capital Region. As a special promotion to RMC Alumni, tickets for the Feb 14th Shoot for the Cure games are only $5 and 100% of the proceeds from tickets bought by RMC Alumni will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society (www.cbcf.org).
The double header begins at 6pm with the Carleton Women taking on the RMC Women’s team who are coming off their victory against York University last weekend. The Men’s game begins at 8pm and the Carleton Ravens will be honoring their three Senior Captains Rob Saunders, Aaron Doornekamp, and Stuart Turnbull.
This is a great opportunity to show your support to both the Paladins and the fight against Breast Cancer.

The Second Annual Workshop for Women in International Security will be held on May 8-10, 2009 in Quebec City. The Programme Paix et sécurité internationales (PSI) wishes to emphasize women’s presence and contribution in international security. During this conference, different activities will take place: academic presentations, career-building seminars, and a one day negotiation exercise on conflict resolution. For the segment on academic presentations, PSI is inviting proposals on security issues, writ large. Proposals addressing a plurality of security issues and employing a variety of methodological techniques are encouraged. Please send your proposals, along with a CV and letter of intent by February 9, 2009. Proposals may be submitted in English or in French and should not exceed 200 words. « Les idéologies en question »

Qu’en est-il des idéologies à notre époque? Principal schème structurant des sociétés politiques occidentales tout au long du XXe siècle les idéologies sont-elles définitivement sorties de nos sociétés? Ou bien au contraire, y a-t-il des indices qui laissent entrevoir l’apparition ou l’émergence de nouvelles formes d’idéologies à notre époque? Si l’on peut sans trop se risquer reconnaître la régression des idéologies traditionnelles dans le champ politique, peut-on conclure à la fin des idéologies tout court? N’y aurait-il pas plutôt des tendances contradictoires à notre époque?
La plupart des sociétés occidentales sont en effet portées par un mouvement de désenchantement face au politique et les idéologies politiques ne constituent incontestablement plus les repères qu’elles ont déjà été, ce dont témoigne, par exemple, l’effritement marqué du clivage gauche-droite. Paradoxalement, notre époque en est également une qui est secouée par l’émergence de nouvelles formes de contestations politiques, contestations aussi bien radicales que modérées qui, menées en marge de l’arène politique traditionnelle, ne sont pas sans contribuer à l’apparition de nouvelles forces idéologiques.
Par ailleurs, la scène internationale est marquée par l’existence d’un consensus assez large dans les sociétés occidentales autour des valeurs libérales, consensus qui s’est imposé au sortir du dernier grand conflit idéologique qu’aura été la guerre froide. Mais à l’opposé, notre époque est également ébranlée par un conflit mondial au cours duquel l’Occident libéral affronte le fondamentalisme islamiste, conflit qui témoigne de l’influence considérable qu’exercent toujours les idéologies sur la scène internationale, notamment les idéologies religieuses et impérialistes.
Enfin, dans les différents champs de la connaissance universitaire, que ce soit en science politique, en sociologie, en histoire, en économie, en philosophie ou en littérature par exemple, le thème des idéologies, de même que l’approche idéologique semble avoir été délaissé au profit d’autres approches, que ce soit l’approche institutionnelle, celles de l’analyse des réseaux ou de l’histoire des idées. Mais l’approche idéologique ne disparaît pas complètement : elle apparaît encore ici et là, sous couvert de nouvelles catégories, qui demeurent néanmoins fortement attachées aux cadres structurels et idéaux propres aux idéologies.
Dans le cadre d’un colloque sur le thème des idéologies qui se tiendra les 22 et 23 octobre 2009 (dates sujettes à modification), au Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean, vous êtes invités à soumettre des propositions de communication (d’une durée de 20 minutes) qui explorent ces différents thèmes.

Korea inviting Korean War Vet grandchildren to visit Korea – all expenses paid
The Korean War Commemoration Council has 15 Canadian vacancies for a flegling 2009 program for grandchildren of Korean War Veterans to visit Korea – all expenses paid – includes air fare, Korean inland expenses such as hotel, meals, ground transportation. The selection will be handled through the Korean embassies, but funded and controlled by the Korean Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA). Since this is not a bereavement program, living Veterans can submit nominations for their grandchildren to participate in this amazing new offer. So get your applications in, Veterans! If you belong to a Korean Veterans Association of Canada (KVA) Unit, you might have your president or secretary make inquiries with the national organization http://www.kvacanada.com/. The new program is in line with the MPVA’s philosophy of ensuring the sacrifices of Korean War Veterans are never forgotten, by bringing the commemoration process forward to a second generation of their successors. Korea Vet News is not going to become involved in the sign-up process, but will report on the program as requested by MPVA if and when received.

Several readers have commented on the appropriateness of the presence of Mr.Robert Fowler’s name on the seminar agenda, given his disappearance in Niger on 14 December 2008. Plusieurs lecteurs ont fait des commentaires sur l’à-propos de la présence du nom de M. Robert Fowler à l’agenda du séminaire, étant donné sa disparition au Niger le 14 décembre 2008. Il y a plusieurs mois que l’Institut de la CAD avait invité M. Fowler, en tant que membre de son conseil d’administration, à participer au séminaire, invitation qu’il avait acceptée. Nous allons conserver son nom sur la liste jusqu’à ce que nous ayons d’autres informations ; faire autrement enverrait un mauvais signal. Nous espérons qu’il nous reviendra sain et sauf rapidement.

Canadian Study of Parliament Group
The Canadian Study of Parliament Group’s James R. Mallory Research Grant for the Study of Parliament is meant to inspire continued interest in the parliamentary system of government. Valued at a maximum of $8,000, the research grant is open to interested observers of parliamentary institutions who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
Research proposals must be submitted no later than March 1, 2009. Additional information about these awards may be found at www.studyparliament.ca
Groupe canadien d’étude des parlements
Le Groupe canadien d’étude des parlements subvention à la recherche James R. Mallory pour l’étude du Parlement vise à soutenir l’intérêt pour le régime parlementaire canadien. D’un montant maximal de 8 000 $, la subvention à la recherche est destinée aux observateurs des institutions parlementaires. Ces derniers doivent être citoyens canadiens ou résidents permanents. Les projets de recherche doivent être présentés au plus tard le 1er mars 2009. Le site www.etudeparlementaire.ca donne des renseignements supplémentaires.
