Who Am I?

  • I was born in 1869.
  • I joined the Royal Military College in Kingston in 1885.
  • I served as an official of the Topographical Surveys Branch of the Department of the Interior since graduating from the College.
  • I wrote ‘The R.M.C. waltzes for piano [music]’ dedicated to the Gentlemen Cadets of the Royal Military College of Canada, which was published by A. & S. Nordheimer in 1891.
  • I wrote a book of poetry about the South African War, ‘Maple leaves in khaki: the blooding of the whelps and other verses’ which was published by Taylor & Clarke, 1901
  • I was an enthusiastic and hard-working militia officer.
  • I took additional courses of training and was in command of the 23rd (Ottawa) Field Battery [now 30th Field Artillery Regiment RCA] when the First World War broke out.
  • I went overseas as adjutant of the 1st Brigade Canadian Field Artillery
  • Sir John French, in his despatch of November 30th, 1915, recommended me “for gallant and distinguished service in the field.”
  • I died in 1929, at 60 years of age.
