RMC Track and Field Team at U of T (Fred Foot Classic)
By: CJB
The RMC Track and Field team travelled to U of T this past weekend to take on various OUA schools. With a more confidence in their ability to race, the team, on a 200m track, earned points in eight events, and set 8 new personnel best times.
In the sprinters, special mention goes to Felix-Olivier Cordeau (photo left), who beat his 60 metre PB in his heat, and then beat it again in the final. He then raced a strong 300 metre, placing third overall and setting a new PB. Running from the inside lane, Felix-Olivier was able to take away the staggers half way through the race and then held on for the Race Section win. Amy Thonrton led to women, quick out of the blocks in the 300, her form helped her push to the end to place 8th, and set a new PB.
Stuck in the slow heat, our middle distance runners will be hoping for better pacing at next week’s race. David Bernatchez led his 600 metre heat, finishing 8th overall in 1:32.80. In the women’s 1000 metre, Laura Virgin placed 12th, also setting a new PB.
In the first 1500m heat, Richard Hayes pushed for an early lead, but, John Marshall was able to quickly close it up and lead the RMC men in a time of 4:24.85, with Richard mere seconds behind. The second heat’s lead was traded continuously between Donald Saul and Eric Henderson, with Eric pushing through the final laps to finish in 4:33.63.
In the 4×800 metre relay, the boys, fresh from the 1500 metre races, averaged 35 second 200 metre laps, with finish times between 2:10 and 2:21. Marshall, Hayes, Saul and Henderson placed 1st, setting a time for the season that, as the 3rd fastest all-time time, will be a challenge to beat.
Next Race: McGill Team challenge on Friday/Saturday, January 28/29. Interested in more information about the running program at RMC, please email s24927@rmc.ca.
