The main headquarters building at the Royal Military College of Canada was named Mackenzie building after Alexander Mackenzie, 2nd Prime Minister of Canada and the man given credit for being the founder of the Royal Military College. As you enter the Mackenzie building at the Royal Military College of Canada you immediately see a stair case which was designated the memorial stairway after the First World War by 151 Sir Archibald Cameron Macdonell, RMC Commandant 1919-25. The staircase is decorated with the photographs of all those ex-cadets who had died on military service: 99 Captain T.W. Chalmers, Canadian Mounted Rifles and 134 Captain J.H. Laurie, Royal Lancaster Regiment are ex-cadets who had died of wounds or were killed in action in South Africa 1899-91.
9265 Ross McKenzie, the RMC museum curator said “It’s a memorial to all of the ex-cadets of RMC and now all of the other military colleges who have died in the service of Canada. It symbolizes the college’s motto, truth, duty, valour, it shows the high cost of war and shows what the college was meant to do, to produce officers to serve Canada when they were needed.“
