College Hosts Military History Symposium
In recognition of the bicentennial of the War of 1812, this year’s RMCC Military History Symposium was entitled “North America: From Acrimony to Accommodation, 1754-1871”, and focused on both the war itself and the years following it. Held on 4-5 April, the symposium featured both local speakers from the College and others from around the world, including Dr. Eliot Cohen, Dr. Phillip Buckner, Prof. François Pernot, Prof. Bernard Andrès, Dr. Richard Barbuto, Donald E. Graves, and Major John R. Grodzinski.
“It is fitting that we hold this symposium here, in Currie Hall,” College Commandant BGen Eric Tremblay said in his opening remarks, “and at the Royal Military College of Canada, where so much of our Canadian military history resides. It is also fitting that we have our guests here from the United States. “
College Principal Dr. Joel Sokolsky echoed that when he said, “We continue to feel the effects of the War of 1812 today. Borders are a result of such conflicts, including the one that our American colleagues had to cross to get here today. That you can do so is evidence of how far we’ve come. Cadets Move On
At a ceremony held last month in Mackenzie Building and officiated by the Director of Cadets, LCol Patrick Lemyre, 25267 OCdt Andrew Harper and 25445 OCdt Zachary Boyden moved on from the College. OCdt Harper received his commission and is now 2Lt Harper, while OCdt Boyden relinquished to the rank of Corporal.

Dr Lubomyr Luciuk has been appointed as a part-time Member of the PAROLE BOARD OF CANADA. A professor in the Department of Politics and Economics at the Royal Military College of Canada he is also a Fellow of the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto. Dr Luciuk has written and edited numerous books, papers, and opinion-editorials on a wide range of topics, notably in the fields of political geography, refugee studies and Canadian ethnic & immigration history. Currently he is co-editing a book on modern European famines with Dr Declan Curran (Dublin University) and Dr Andrew Newby (University of Helsinki), scheduled for publication by Routledge in 2013.
Announcing five new appointments and one reappointment to the Parole Board, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, said: “As an independent administrative tribunal, the Parole Board of Canada makes conditional release, record suspension and clemency decisions that contribute to the protection of society,” adding, “I congratulate these highly qualified, knowledgeable, and experienced individuals on their new positions.”
A Governor in Council (GIC) appointment is made by the Governor General on the advice of the Queen’s Privy Council of Canada (i.e. the Cabinet). The appointments are made through an Order in Council and range from heads of agencies and chief executive officers of Crown Corporations to members of quasi-judicial tribunals. Professor Luciuk’s first GIC appointment was in 1996-1998, when he was appointed as a Member of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.
