On Tuesday, March 18, 2014, surrounded by family at the Ottawa Civic Hospital at the age of 83. Predeceased by Jeannette, his beloved wife of 55 years. Cherished father of David, Thomas (Therese Rajotte), Joanne (Robert Manson), Robert (Kristina) and Mary. Much loved grandfather of Quinn Dabros and Brianna and Meghan Dowsley. Also predeceased by his brother, John (Bo) Dowsley; sister-in-law, Mary Clancy; and brother-in-law, Jack Webber. He will be fondly remembered by his sisters-in-law, Margaret Dowsley and Lois Webber; brother-in-law, Robert Clancy; and all of their families. Brian was born in Canora, SK and grew up in Toronto, ON. After attending Royal Military College in Kingston, ON, he attained his B.Sc Eng. at the University of Toronto, followed by his Masters at Queens University. He enjoyed a long and successful engineering career that took him to Winnipeg and Toronto, with the majority of time in Ottawa with MM Dillon as principle/manager. Brian’s memory will carry on at the cherished family cottage on Charleston Lake. Those wishing to commemorate his life may donate to the or another charity of their choice. Brian will rest in peace with Jeannette at Capital Memorial Gardens. A celebration of Brian’s life will take place at a later date. Source

Ozzie passed away peacefully and with great dignity in his 85th year surrounded by his loving family March 22, 2014 at May Court Hospice, Ottawa, following a short battle with cancer. Born in Nelson, BC May 4, 1929, he was predeceased by his parents Bessie (Annett) and John Isaac Ward. For 58 years the beloved husband and best friend of Joan (Lawlor), cherished father of John (Diana Chang) of Vancouver, Michael (Patty Maloney), Anne (Robert Miller) and Beth (Alain Denis) all of Ottawa. Proud grandfather of Christopher (Sierra Ruffalo), Alexa, David, Adam and Ryan. Survived by his dear sister Annette (Theo deceased) Bruseker of Calgary and dear uncle of Karen (Archie) Magee of Sylvan Lake Alberta and Ian (Donna) McLatchie of Sechelt BC. Raised in Sarcee Alberta, Ozzie attended Calgary’s Central High School. Upon graduation, Ozzie reported to Royal Military College in Kingston in the summer of 1948 as part of the first, “New One Hundred” class that reopened the College after WWII. He studied Mechanical Engineering and graduated with a BSC from Queen’s University in 1954 following service with the Artillery in Korea from 1952-53. He also achieved some fame as a marksman on the shooting team and some notoriety for other endeavours. On completion at Queen’s, Ozzie joined 4 RCHA at Camp Utopia, NB prior to posting to Hemer, West Germany on NATO duty in 1955. It was in Utopia that Ozzie met Joan Lawlor of Saint John, the love of his life, and following a whirlwind courtship and Regimental wedding sailed to Europe and the start of a lifelong journey of fun and adventure including stints in Petawawa, Shrivenham UK, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. Gifted of a fine baritone voice, on family trips, he led family sing-alongs with his old favourites. He retired from the Canadian Army in 1983 and joined Public Works Canada in the Engineering Branch of the Real Property Management Group. He retired from the Public Service in 1990 and they took up residence at the home he built at Chaffey’s Locks, enjoying life in the country during the summer and their home in Maple Leaf Estates, Florida in winter. He served as President of the Rideau Lakes Golf Club in the early 1990’s. The family would like to thank all those involved with Ozzie’s care especially the amazing staff on the Oncology wing 5E at the General Hospital and those at the Ottawa Cancer Centre and the May Court Hospice. The family will receive friends at The Beechwood “Sacred Space” Chapel, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa on Wednesday morning, April 2, 2014 from 10 o’clock until time of “Liturgy of the Word” at 11 o’clock. Inurnment in the National Military Section of Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa.
