4912 L.A. (Larry) Hamilton – Class of 1960
April 10, 1938 – November 7, 2015
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Hamilton of Port Coquitlam, loving husband, father and grandfather, on Saturday, November 7, 2015. A recipient of the Governor General’s Award, Larry graduated with 1st class honours from Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC and RMC of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree with honours and a Master of Science (ENG) – Electrical Engineering degree from Queen’s University.
His knowledge and skill led to him being responsible for setting up and maintaining communications for the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Larry retired as a Captain from the Canadian Armed Forces after 10 years of service and went on to a long and varied career with BC Tel/Telus, which included a key role in the building of the Telecom Canada Lightguide System in BC. He retired from Telus Mobility as their Senior Transport Engineer in 2000.
Larry had a passion for living life. He was a self-taught pianist and guitar player and an avid golfer who loved to be outside, nurturing his fruit trees and vegetable gardens. He loved to travel and spent his winters in Sun City, AZ with his wife Joanne, which, as Larry would say, was “not too bad for an old guy.”
Larry leaves behind his loving wife Joanne, son Bill (Allison) and daughter Vicki Mitchell (Darryl), as well as grandchildren Jordan, Alicia, Matthew and Elizabeth.
An informal gathering for family and friends to share memories will take place Thursday, November 19, 2015, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Pitt Meadows Golf Club, 13615 Harris Road, Pitt Meadows, BC. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the BC Cancer Agency, Heart and Stroke Foundation or the BC SPCA.
