2632 Major-General (Ret’d) James Gardner (RMC ’38)

It is with great sadness that we learned today of the death of Major-General (Retired) James Charlton Gardner on Monday evening, 29 October. General Gardner served with the Strathcona’s as Second in Command in 1956, and later as Commander 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Germany with the Regiment under his command. We were proud to have him as Colonel of the Regiment during the period 11 November 1978 to 11 November 1982. General Gardner will also be remembered by many of us as the first Commanding Officer of the Fort Garry Horse when that Regiment re-joined the regular order of battle in 1958. General Jim was my first Commanding Officer in the FGH and served as Colonel of the Regiment during the first year of my tour as Commanding Officer of the Strathconas. Naturally I feel a great sense of personal loss at the death of this outstanding leader and I know this will be felt equally by my contemporaries.
