Lieutenant-Colonel (Dr.) Andy Brown and Dr. Howard Coombs authored chapters in the just released CANSOFCOM publication Force Multiplier: Utilization of SOF from a Small State Perspective. Lieutenant-Colonel Brown’s “The Strategic Leverage of SOF” looks at the strategic impact SOF can add to small states’ international contributions to alliance or coalition operations.
Dr. Coombs’ “Canadian Special Operations Forces and Enabling Bad Strategic Behaviour: Operation Aegis” explores the strategic connection, in a Canadian context, between the usage of SoF and international operations.

RMC History Professor and Department Chair Dr. Kevin Brushett has recently joined the Queen’s Centre for International and Defence Policy as Fellow! Dr. Brushett’s exciting research focuses on the relationship between civil society organizations and the state in Canada in the latter half of the 20th century. He is currently finalizing a book on the Company of Young Canadians (Mirror of a Generation: The Company of Young Canadians and Youth Activism in the Long Sixties). He has also working a project that examines the growth and performance of Canadian international development policies between 1965 and 1985 through the lens of the Canadian International Development Agency’s Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Branch, which sponsored community development programs in the Global South between 1965 and 1990.

Le Prof Kevin Brushett, professeur d’histoire au CMR et directeur du département, a récemment rejoint le Queen’s Centre for International and Defence Policy en tant que Fellow ! Les recherches du Prof Brushett portent sur les relations entre les organisations de la société civile et l’état au Canada dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. Il finalise actuellement un livre sur la Compagnie des jeunes Canadiens (Mirror of a Generation: The Company of Young Canadians and Youth Activism in the Long Sixties). Il travaille également sur un projet qui examine la croissance et la performance des politiques canadiennes de développement international entre 1965 et 1985 à travers le prisme de la branche des organisations non gouvernementales (ONG) de l’Agence canadienne de développement international, qui a parrainé des programmes de développement communautaire dans les pays du Sud entre 1965 et 1990.

Dr. Howard G. Coombs was a contributor to the recently released MQUP publication “Total Defence Forces in the Twenty-First Century.” Edited by Joakim Berndtsson, Irina Goldenberg and Stefanie Von Hlatky, this international volume examines the idea of “total defence,’ which combines and extends military and civil in a state of war or emergency, including all social institutions mobilize to defend the state. In a research based analysis, Dr. Coombs focuses on the historical underpinnings of the Canadian Defence Team concept, suggesting that it has a shaky foundation.
