Energy vs Experience/Les plus jeunes l’emportent … encore …

A First in 49 years of existence, le Tournoi de Ballon sur glace des Anciennes et Anciens du CMR St-Jean was not held in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec, but rather at RMC Kingston, the weekend of the 2nd to the 4th of February 2024.

Unfortunately, the rink in the Vanier Pavilion at CMR St-Jean has been out of commission for several months, which caused the Tournament committee to roll up their sleeves and come up with a solution to ensure our dear Tournament would remain uninterrupted since its first edition in 1975.  Believe it or not, even in January 2021, right in the middle of the Covid crisis, a Virtual version of the Tournament, consisting of an on-line Quiz, was organized and attended by several dozens of players.  How is that for dedication?

With tremendous support from RMC Kingtson’s leadership and superb contribution of CFB Kingston, the 49th Edition of the Tournament was allowed to proceed.

La réponse des équipes à ce changement de location géographique a été impressionnante et nous avons accueilli un total de 24 équipes, dont 13 composées d’Élof et aspirants de marine et 11 équipes d’anciennes et anciens. Cette année, il y avait trois catégories: Féminine (3 équipes) ; Compétition (5 équipes) et Récréatif (16 équipes).  Once again this year, the RMC Alumni covered the registration cost for the 13 OCdt Teams (8 from CMR St-Jean, 4 from RMC Kingston and one composed of Ocdts and NCdts from both Colleges).  Avec autant d’équipes d’Élofs qui participent au tournoi depuis les dernières années, le futur du tournoi semble être en très bonne posture !

One of the best signs of a bright future for the Tournament is the fact that at least five (5) teams of Officer Cadets had the initiative to acquire brand new Team Jerseys… such an investment is undoubtedly a sign of commitment… C’est beau à voir !!  Another very pleasant moment was the huge participation and exchange between Ex-Cadets and Cadets during the Saturday night Pizza evening at the RMC Senior Staff Mess.

As far as the 49th Edition Final Results, it was very similar to last year’s edition in that the younger generation once again prevailed.  La victoire de la catégorie féminine est encore allée aux Chicks with Sticks qui ont mis la main sur le Trophée TD Assurance devant Les Sacoches; le Trophée du Chapitre du Fort St-Jean de la catégorie Compétition a encore été remporté en tirs de barrage avec une autre victoire de Les P’tites Créances contre Les Jeudis et la finale du Récréatif a vu se mesurer deux équipes d’Élofs du CMR St-Jean : Les Primates contre les Clôtures et ce sont Les Clôtures qui ont remporté le Trophée Rheinmetall.   Il est important ici de préciser, qu’en plus des commanditaires ci-haut mentionnés, les entreprises et organisations suivantes ont continué à soutenir le tournoi de façon continue et très généreuse au cours de nombreuses années: La Corporation du Fort St-Jean, le CEGEP de St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, le Groupe Maurice, Continuum Real Estate Venture Inc (Moving Heroes) ainsi que Knapper.  Bien entendu, la tenue d’un tel tournoi n’aurait pu avoir lieu sans la présence d’arbitres et de chronomètreurs qui sont tous venus de plusieurs coins du Québec, grâce au soutien indéfectible de M. André Durand, un piller de notre tournoi.

On a more personal note, I can assure you that myself and my team mates from the 89ers felt every bone and muscle on Sunday morning… I guess it comes with winning le Trophée des Vieilles Rotules with an average age of 57.

Finalement, je garde un merci très spécial pour le professionnalisme exemplaire et la disponibilité exceptionnelle de la Capt Michelle Evans tout au long de la planification et le déroulement de cette édition du tournoi… I do know how much work it was to hold the Tournament in Kingston vs St-Jean and her remarkable leadership was key to this success.  Bravo Zulu !

L’année prochaine marquera la 50e Édition du Tournoi… on a déjà hâte de vous y voir !
