Paladins Fall to Gaels in 36th Carr-Harris Cup | Les Paladins s’inclinent contre les Gaels à la 36e édition de la Coupe Carr-Harris
The Carr-Harris Challenge Cup will stay with the Queen’s Gaels. Competing in the 36th annual event, the RMC Paladins took to the ice at the Leon’s Centre Thursday 8 February in downtown Kingston, looking to reclaim the Cup after a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss last year. However, as it turned out, the Gaels had other ideas, going on to defeat the Paladins 6-0.
With a playoff like intensity permeating throughout the building, thanks to the 3,586 fans in attendance, the tempo was set at a high pace from the opening puck drop. With no shortage of physicality during the opening minutes, both teams were looking to set a tone. Shortly after the midway point of the opening period, it was Queen’s who would find the back of the net first. Then nearly four minutes later, the Gaels were able to double their lead with a power-play marker.
Attempting to cut into the Queen’s lead as the second period got underway, the Paladins were able to tilt the ice towards the Gaels end. Only able to generate three shots in the first frame, RMC turned up the offence, putting ten shots on goal in the second. However, despite creating some good opportunities, the Paladins were unable to beat Gael’s netminder Christian Purboo. Instead, it was Queen’s tallying the lone goal of the period, extending their lead to 3-0.
With momentum on their side, the Gaels came out flying in the final 20-minutes. Scoring just 47-seconds into the period, Queen’s increased their advantage to 4-0. Then, putting the game out of reach, the Gaels would tack on two more goals later in the period, sinking the Paladins 6-0.
In goal for the Paladins, Michael Davis made 31 saves.
Named MVP’s for the game, Paladins defenceman Bruce Coltart received honour for RMC, while Queen’s forward Dalton Duhart was awarded the honour for the Gaels.

The RMC Alumni Association presented two awards to Alumni at the game. The first was the Battle of the Classes Plaque to the threepeat winners the Class of 1980 who were represented by 12694 Nelson and Barbara May and 12661 Paul and Shirley Fleet.

Le trophée du match de la Coupe Carr-Harris restera en possession des Gaels de Queen’s. Disputant la 36e édition de ce match annuel, les Paladins du CMR ont sauté sur la glace du Centre Leon jeudi soir au centre-ville de Kingston, cherchant à reprendre le trophée des mains de leurs rivaux après une défaite crève-coeur de 2-1 en prolongation l’an dernier. Cependant, les Gaels avaient d’autres plans en tête et ils ont vaincu les Paladins 6-0.
Avec une intensité digne d’un match éliminatoire qui régnait dans l’amphithéâtre grâce aux 3586 spectateurs présents, le rythme de jeu a été élevé dès la première mise au jeu. La robustesse était aussi au rendez-vous au cours des premières minutes de ce match alors que les deux équipes tentaient d’imposer leur cadence. Un peu après la mi-parcours dans la période initiale, Queen’s a ouvert la marque. Près de quatre minutes plus tard, les Gaels ont doublé leur avance sur un but en avantage numérique.
Tentant de réduire l’avance de Queen’s en début de deuxième période, les Paladins ont été en mesure de s’imposer sur une séquence. N’ayant dirigé que trois tirs sur le filet adverse en première période, le CMR a levé le jeu d’un cran à l’attaque et a accumulé 10 tirs en deuxième. Cependant, malgré les occasions de marquer qu’ils ont créé, les Paladins n’ont pas été en mesure de déjouer le gardien Christian Purboo des Gaels. À la place, Queen’s a inscrit l’unique but de la période, prolongeant cette avance à 3-0.
Avec le vent dans le dos, les Gaels ont débordé leurs adversaires en troisième période. Marquant après seulement 47 secondes de jeu dans l’engagement, Queen’s a porté son avance à 4-0. Déjà confortablement devant, les Gaels ont ajouté deux autres buts en fin de période pour couler les Paladins par une marque finale de 6-0.
Michael Davis a réalisé 31 arrêts devant la cage des Paladins.
Le défenseur Bruce Coltart a été élu joueur du match chez les Paladins, tandis que l’attaquant Dalton Duhart a mérité cet honneur chez les Gaels.
Les Paladins n’ont plus qu’un match à jouer au calendrier 2023-2024 des SUO en accueillant les Lions de York, le samedi 10 février à l’Arena Constantine à l’occasion de la Journée des finissants. La rondelle sera mise en jeu pour ce match à 14 h.
