The Royal Military College Hockey Program began in 1886 and continues today, pursuing the same goals it had over 130 years ago; carve out leaders of integrity who succeed in life aided by their experience on the fields of athletic conflict.
RMC has a rich history as a Military College, as an academic institution and within its athletics program. The hockey team is very fortunate to be part of two historic hockey games that occur every year the Carr-Harris Cup is an annual game versus RMC’s cross town rival Queens University, currently played at the K-Rock center in Kingston. The Carr-Harris Cup was initiated in 1986 by the International Hockey Hall of Fame to celebrate the 100th year of the hockey rivalry between Queen’s and RMC, dating back to 1886. It is the oldest hockey rivalry in the world on record.
The Challenge Cup takes place between RMC and its prestigious US counter part, The US Military Academy (Westpoint-US Army). The Challenge Cup is recorded as the longest-running annual international hockey game in the world. It began in 1923 and has continued annually and alternates being played at USMA-Tate Arena (Westpoint, NY) and RMC-Kingston, Ontario in front of capacity crowds.

With my tongue firmly planted in my cheek, I know that hockey is by far a superior sport to say, football or rugby. I know that is something my Varsity buds from those sports would vehemantly disagree with. And well they should!!! Because what is key to any team sport was the camaraderie/chemistry of the team dynamic. I never was a gung-ho military guy but I embraced the RMC experience. And hockey was an essential and requisite part of my time at RMC. Although I put more emphasis on our seasonal play in the QUAA and OUAA, those West Point and USAFA games were great fun to play in. As an aside, West Point was the most incredible campus I have ever been on in no small part due to its history. I’ll be at the West Point game this year at “Slush Puppie” arena….. the dumbest/oddest name for a rink I’ve ever heard. The game will bring back good memories. Except for my last game against them in their barn. Worst loss RMC ever experienced. Not my finest hour. I still bear the scars, LOL. Go Reddies! (if I’m allowed to say that these days) 10950 DM Hall
