(M) Volleyball Paladins travelled to Kamloops over the holidays…
From 27 to 31 December the Royal Military College Men’s Volleyball Paladins travelled to Kamloops, British Columbia to train and compete in a tournament. The tournament was hosted by the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Wolf Pack and included the Paladins, the University of Calgary Dinos, and the University of British Columbia Okanogan (UBCO) Heat.
Due to a weather occurrence, the Paladins did not begin their training until 28 December where they were able to practice in the TRU facilities. The TRU head-coach invited the Paladins to attend an impromptu training session with the Wolf Pack that evening. Eager to train and improve for the second half of their season, the Paladins accepted the offer. The training session on the evening of the 28th was a variety of game based drills known as “wash games.”
On 29 December the Paladins practiced one more time before they played their first game of the tournament against the TRU Wolf Pack. The Paladins played a hard fought match that was plagued with injuries. Unfortunately, the Paladins lost and the match scores were 25-20, 25-14, and 25-16 for TRU.
On 30 December the Paladins played two games. The first game was against the 3rd place ranked team in the CIS, the University of Calgary Dinos. The Paladins put up a good fight against this powerhouse from the Canada West conference but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities they had to pull away from the Dinos. The Paladins lost in three straight hard fought matches with match scores 25-20, 25-16, and 25-14.
The second game of the day was against the UBCO Heat. With a diminished roster due to injuries, the Paladins did not want to leave the tournament without showing their true potential. After dropping the first two sets with set scores of 25-16, and 25-17, the Paladins rallied back and went point for point with the Heat in an electrifying set that ended with a high score of 28-26 in favour of the Heat.
The Paladins enjoyed their time in Kamloops thoroughly as they were able to train with volleyball teams from another conference and see one of the most beautiful regions in Canada.
The Paladins open the second half of their OUA season against the Nipissing University Lakers at the KMCSC on 22 January 2016. Come by and support your Paladins. The support from the Kingston military and volleyball community, alumni, RMC staff, and fellow cadets is always appreciated.

Rugby 7s Tournament held in the Dome
On Saturday 16 January, RMC hosted the first of the three Rugby 7s Tournaments that will be held in the Dome this month and next (February 6th and 27th). Notwithstanding significant weather challenges in the morning, the seven invited teams reached Kingston safely from as far away as Montreal and Toronto.
RMC began its day with a less than stellar performance against Queens, finishing on the very short end of a 0-39 score. Thereafter, however, the team rose to the occasion with victories against Seneca (24-7), Loyalist (36-5) and in the playoffs Kingston Panthers (22-17). Third place in the eight team competition was their reward. The result is a good foundation for the work needed to prepare for the Canadian University Rugby 7s Championships in Burnaby in March.
