Calgary Area Cadets
Chris Theal (18524), President of the Calgary Branch of the RMC Club of Canada, and the members of the Calgary Branch invite you, a friend and your parents to the Calgary Annual Christmas Cadet Reception.
The event will be held in the Sergeant’s Mess of Mewata Armouries, 801 – 11th St. SW. The time for the event is from 1600 hrs to 1930 hrs on Friday, December 19, 2008.
Some snacks and beverages will be provided compliments of the Calgary Branch.
Dress is Scarlets for the cadets, jacket and tie (or ladies equivalent) for guests.

Agent Orange ex gratia payment
On September 12, 2007, the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, was joined by the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, as he announced Canada’s Government is offering a one-time, tax-free ex gratia payment of $20,000 related to the testing of unregistered U.S. military herbicides, including Agent Orange, at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Gagetown in 1966 and 1967.
To qualify for the ex gratia payment, individuals must have an illness associated with exposure to contaminants in Agent Orange, as determined by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine, and must have worked at, trained at, been posted to, or lived within five kilometres of CFB Gagetown, when Agent Orange was tested in 1966 and 1967.
Those who believe they may qualify can call 1-866-522-2122 for an application, or download the application. Before doing so, please review the detailed eligibility criteria or use the self-screening tool.
The deadline for applications is April 1, 2009.

Paiement à titre gracieux lié à l’agent OrangeLe 12 septembre 2007, l’honorable Greg Thompson, ministre des Anciens Combattants, accompagné de l’honorable Peter MacKay, ministre de la Défense nationale, a annoncé que le gouvernement du Canada verserait à titre gracieux aux personnes admissibles un paiement unique de 20 000 $ en rapport aux essais d’herbicides militaires américains non homologués, dont l’agent Orange, menés à la base des Forces canadiennes (BFC) de Gagetown en 1966 et 1967.
Les personnes admissibles au paiement annoncé doivent avoir un problème de santé lié à l’exposition aux contaminants de l’agent Orange, telle que déterminée par l’Institute of Medicine de la US National Academy of Sciences, et avoir été stationné, en poste ou en entraînement à la base de Gagetown ou avoir habité dans un rayon de cinq kilomètres de la base lors des essais de l’agent Orange en 1966 et 1967.
Quiconque croit être admissible à ce paiement doit remplir une demande qu’on obtient en composant le 1-866-522-2022. On peut aussi télécharger le formulaire. Avant de faire une demande, il serait sage de prendre connaissance des critères d’admissibilité ou d’utiliser l’outil d’auto-évaluation.
La date limite pour présenter une demande est le 1er avril 2009.

Veterans Independence Program Expansion
The Government of Canada has expanded the Veterans Independence Program (VIP) to provide housekeeping and/or grounds maintenance benefits to eligible low-income and disabled survivors of certain traditional war service Veterans. VIP is a national home care program that helps eligible Veterans and their survivors remain healthy and independent in their own homes and communities.

Élargissement des critères d’admissibilité au Programme pour l’autonomie des anciens combattants
Le gouvernement du Canada a élargi les critères d’admissibilité au Programme pour l’autonomie des anciens combattants (PAAC) afin de pouvoir procurer des services d’entretien ménager ou d’entretien du terrain aux survivants à faible revenu ou handicapés de certains anciens combattants ayant servi en temps de guerre. Le Programme pour l’autonomie des anciens combattants vise à permettre aux anciens combattants admissibles et à leurs survivants de pouvoir vivre en santé et de façon autonome dans leur domicile et près des leurs.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities – 3 December
Dignity and justice for all of us is the theme of this year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, as well as for the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Dignity and justice for all persons are established universal principles. Since its inception, the United Nations has recognized that the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family are the foundations of freedom, justice and peace in the world. These principles, along with equality and non-discrimination, have guided the work of the United Nations for the past 60 years and are enshrined in various instruments such as the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as in treaties such as the International Covenants on Human Rights, and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. These instruments are among those which make up the international human rights framework, are complementary and reaffirm that all human rights are universal, indivisible, interrelated, interdependent and mutually reinforcing.

How the Day may be observed
- Involve: Observance of the Day provides opportunities for participation by all interested communities – governmental, non-governmental and the private sector – to focus upon catalytic and innovative measures to further implement international norms and standards related to persons with disabilities. Schools, universities and similar institutions can make particular contributions with regard to promoting greater interest and awareness among interested parties of the social, cultural, economic, civil and political rights of persons with disabilities.
- Organize: Hold forums, public discussions and information campaigns in support of the Day focusing on disability issues and trends and ways and means by which persons with disabilities and their families are pursuing independent life styles, sustainable livelihoods and financial security.
- Celebrate: Plan and organize performances everywhere to showcase – and celebrate – the contributions by persons with disabilities to the societies in which they live and convene exchanges and dialogues focusing on the rich and varied skills, interests and aspirations of persons with disabilities.
- Take Action: A major focus of the Day is practical action to further implement international norms and standards concerning persons with disabilities and to further their participation in social life and development on the basis of equality. The media have especially important contributions to make in support of the observance of the Day – and throughout the year – regarding appropriate presentation of progress and obstacles implementing disability-sensitive policies, programmes and projects and to promote public awareness of the contributions by persons with disabilities.

UVS Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Student Competition
This document provides details on the operational concept for a “made in Canada” Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Student Competition. The basic mission for the students will be to locate points of interest within a designated area surrounding a forest fire in the remote Canadian wilderness. It is proposed herein that the competition take place in two phases with Phase I design report due January 11th 2009 and Phase II, flight demonstration, in May / June 2009.
The purpose of the competition is to promote and develop Canadian expertise and experience in unmanned systems technologies at the university and college levels. Even small scale uninhabited aerial vehicles are complex systems requiring a well planned and executed design approach. Additionally, safety considerations are no less important in this competition than in any other air vehicle design project.
