Varsity Athletes Honoured

A man who was the oldest athlete in the room and a woman who was among the youngest were honoured Wednesday night as the male and female athletes of the year at Royal Military College.
In a ceremony in the New Gym, Tom McMullen of the men’s volleyball team was named winner of the Tommy Smart Cup as male athlete of the year. A 31-year-old fifth-year middle blocker from Kanata, Ont., McMullen is completing his masters of applied science. Also a member of the Paladins 2002-05, McMullen led Ontario University Athletics in blocks and he led his team in points this season.
Alex Hogg, goalkeeper of the women’s soccer team, received the Kelly Gawne Memorial Cup as female athlete of the year. A first-year student from Ottawa who hopes to pursue studies in aeronautical engineering, Hogg was named rookie of the year in the East division of OUA, the first RMC athlete to be so recognized.
At Wednesday’s awards presentations, Hogg — whose father, Kelly Hogg, was a varsity squash player in his time at RMC — was also named most valuable player of her team and the top first-year athlete at the college.
Adelaide Fearnley of Gibsons, B.C., was chosen to receive the H.R.H. Prince of Wales Cup for excellence in all four pillars throughout her four years at RMC. A captain of the women’s soccer team, Fearnley maintained high marks in a demanding Honours Chemistry program while being selected for several important leadership positions during her time at the college.

Another of the women’s soccer team’s players, Stephanie Bengle of Oakville, Ont., was the recipient of the Capt. Matthew Dawe Memorial Cup as outstanding ROTP athlete who excels in all aspects of college life. The Honours Psychology student was a team captain for the last two seasons.
The fencing team was well represented on the podium, as Harrison Kelertas won the Hutton Trophy as top second-year cadet, Jonathan Wilson received the RMC Club of Canada Trophy as the top third-year cadet and Marion Agier won the RMC Club of Canada Hamilton Branch Cup as the premier fourth-year cadet. Kalina Larocque was presented with the Whitaker Cup as best team captain.
The Fair Play award was given to Matthew Greenwood — who had to come down from the emcee’s podium to receive it — while the Douglas Massey Cook Memorial Cup for being selected varsity team of the year was given to the rugby team. After a 2-5 regular year, the Paladins reached the quarter-finals before dropping a close 34-31 decision to Guelph.
In addition to Hogg, most valuable player awards were also given to goaltender Evan Deviller of the hockey team, Aaron Barry (rugby), Steven Bartholomew (men’s soccer), McMullen (men’s volleyball) and Cassidy Chang (women’s volleyball). Agier and Kelertas shared honours as MVP of the fencing team.
