4150 LCdr (Ret’d) Nigel H. Frawley (RMC ’58) is Secretary General of the Comite Maritime International (CMI), a non-governmental organization which contributes to the unification of maritime law. As Secretary General, he is responsible for preparations for International Conferences, Seminars and Colloquia convened by the Comité Maritime International, and maintains liaison with other international organizations. He was educated at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, Canada and the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, England. He served for a number of years in the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Navy in several warships and submarines.
He commanded a submarine and a minelayer. He then resigned his commission as a Lieutenant Commander and attended Law School at the University of Toronto from 1969 to 1972. He has practised marine and aviation law since that time in Toronto. He has written a number of papers and lectured extensively. He was Chairman of the Maritime Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association from 1993 to 1995 and President of the Canadian Maritime Law Association from 1996 to 1998.

5541 Mr Richard (Rick) R.S. Bryant (RRMC RMC ‘63) has been President, Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia in Vancouver since January 2002. He completed a career of over 30 years in the public service with the Royal Canadian Air Forces, the Canadian Hydrographic Service and the Canadian Coast Guard. He moved from Ontario to Vancouver in 1982 where he held various positions with the Coast Guard including Regional Director from 1996 through 2000. He serves as a board member of the Western Marine Community Coalition (WMCC), the Western Marine Community Association, Marine Information Services of North America and the Canadian Maritime Law Association.
He is past Chairman of the Pacific Marine Review Panel, is a member of the National Marine and Industrial Coalition and represents the Chamber of Shipping on a number of environmental working groups. He is a co-chair of the Georgia Basin Marine Vessel Air Quality Work Group, which is actively engaged in preparing an air emission inventory for the west coast of Canada. He is involved with the WMCC and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada in the development of a Human Resources Strategy for the marine industry and with the NMIC in a study of the role of technology and innovation in Canada’s marine sector. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Military College and an MBA from McMaster University.

6873 MGen (Retd) Clive CJ Addy OMM, OStJ, CD (CMR RMC ‘66) is Colonel-Commandant of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. He was accepted in 1961 at Collège Militaire Royal de St-Jean, Québec, and graduated from the Royal Military College in 1966 with a degree in English.
From 1966 to 1973 he held many regimental appointments including a United Nations tour in Cyprus and with 12e RBC in Valcartier, Quebec. From 1973 to 1975 he attended L’École Supérieure de Guerre in Paris before being posted to West Germany as a squadron commander with The Royal Canadian Dragoons from 1975 to 1977.
He was posted to Mobile Command Headquarters in St-Hubert, Quebec, where he served as Staff Officer Armoured Doctrine and on promotion to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1978, as Senior Staff Officer Armour until he returned to West Germany to command the Royal Canadian Dragoons from 1980 to 1982. He then served on the directing staff of the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College in Kingston, Ontario, before being promoted to the rank of colonel and appointed as Chief of Staff, Central Militia Area in Toronto.
In 1987 he was selected to attend National Defence College. On completion in 1988, he was appointed Chief of Staff for Canadian Forces Europe. On promotion to the rank of Brigadier-General in April 1991, he assumed command of 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group and 1st Canadian Division Forward. In 1992, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff Operations for Central Army Group, in Heidelberg, Germany. One year later, he was appointed Chief of Staff Land Force Command in St. Hubert, Quebec. In July 1994, he was promoted to the rank of major-general and appointed Commander of Land Force Western Area, Edmonton, Alberta. He retired in September 1996 after 35 years of service.
He is President of the Canadian Battlefields Foundation, Chair of The National Security Group, Executive Editor of Frontline Security Magazine and member of the Board of the Ottawa Division, Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. He is former National Secretary of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, Past National Vice President of the Conference of Defence Associations, and Past National Chair of the Federation of Military and United Services Institutes of Canada.

Spirit of Math Schools is an “after-school school” program in Toronto providing tutoring, supplemental work for the students, and enrichment classes for “high performance” math students. He also owns andoperates Daretech Consulting, a web hosting and email hosting business.

16503 Michael DM van Aanhout P.Eng. (B.C.), CEA (RMC ’88) is President and Senior Consultant, Stratos Inc. in Ottawa. Stratos is the proud recipient of a 2007-2008 Deputy Ministers’ Pride and Recognition Award for Service Excellence in recognition of
Stratos’ contribution to Management and Governance in the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada Northern Contaminated Sites Program.
Responding to the award Michael van Aanhout states that ‘Stratos is delighted to receive this recognition from a valued client, and appreciates the opportunity to be a strategic partner to such a great team and program.’ He graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario with a degree in Engineering Management, and served in the Canadian Navy for 5 years as a marine systems engineer on both Coasts and in the UK.
He participated in the development and implementation of an environmental auditing program for ships. He subsequently became Regulatory Affairs Manager – Western Canada for Laidlaw Environmental Services Ltd. Michael van Aanhout is President of Stratos and leads their management consulting practice.
His work is grounded in a desire to translate sound environmental and sustainability policy and strategy into improved performance. Michael’s practical experience as an operational engineer and environmental manager informs his work with both public and private-sector clients.

His government work encompasses policy and program development, environment, health and safety management, and managing consultation processes on a range of environmental and sustainability issues such as pollution prevention, recycling, waste management, contaminated sites and abandoned mines, and climate change. Michael van Aanhout is a Certified Environmental Auditor, a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia, and an active member of the Canadian Environmental Auditing Association and the Mineral Economics and Management Society.

Philippe Lagassé is assistant professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa. His research focuses on Canadian foreign and defence policy, American foreign and defence policy, and the study of war. He holds a B.A. in philosophy from McGill University (2001), an M.A. in war studies from the Royal Military College of Canada (2003), and a Ph.D in political science from Carleton University (2007). He also works as a contract defence analyst for both the private and public sector. He is currently
completing a study of Canadian civil-military relations.
