13077 LCol (Ret’d) Dean CJ Black (RMC 1981) is the National Executive Director and Publisher Airforce Magazine. He retired from the Canadian Forces in January 2007, as a Lieutenant-Colonel, after 30 years of service as a tactical helicopter pilot and senior defence analyst. His last flying responsibilities were as Commanding Officer 403 (Helicopter) Operational Training Squadron, in Oromocto, New Brunswick. He has a B.Sc. (Applied) and a M.A. (War Studies) from the Royal Military College of Canada at Kingston, Ontario.

13868 Major (Ret’d) Mike D Fabbro (RMC 1983) grew up in Ottawa as the “middle” of five boys up in a close-knit family. There was never a shortage of activity or rough play in the Fabbro household. In fact, in high school Mike and his brothers were wrestling champions, and were constantly on the road competing. After high school, Mike followed his in his father’s footsteps and joined the Air Force and attended RMC in Kingston where he earned a Commerce degree. There, he continued to wrestle, compete and win. It’s also where he discovered the new sport of windsurfing. The rest, as they say is history. Mike went on to win six consecutive national windsurfing titles in a variety of disciplines from 1985 to 1990, competed in five world championships and won a World C up title in the freestyle event. In 1988, Mike’s sense of adventure led him to try a new sport called snowboarding. He and a handful of his windsurfing friends were the first snowboarders on the hill and Mike remembers having to “ask permission to get on the lifts.” He was instrumental in developing a national teaching standard and was the director of high performance snowboard camps at Mont Tremblant and Blackcomb. Mike’s involvement in snowboarding prompted his first book: Snowboarding: the Ultimate Freeride, in 1997. The book was a Canadian Best Seller, selling over 20,000 copies. Although out of print, it can still be found on Amazon.com and in bargain bins in the UK and in New Zealand. When asked to be the marketing manager for the Canadian Military taekwondo (TKD) team, Mike took up the sport himself and after five years of dedicated training earned his black belt. Mike continues to train and coaches a kids program at the Ottawa Athletic Club. After moping th a t everything hurt after a TKD session, Mike’s wife, Norma, – a fulltime fitness professional and yoga instructor, told him to try yoga as a way to recover. Mike (who always listens to his better half) figured he had nothing to lose by getting in touch with his feminine side. To his (and Norma’s) surprise, Mike was hooked. He has immersed himself in everything yoga every since. Mike knows that yoga will continue to grow and worries about the lack of standardization in the training and instruction. “Some people are teaching classes after a weekend workshop,” said Fabbro. Yoga can be fantastic on many levels, but if participants are hurting themselves, they won’t continue, and that’s a shame,” continued Fabbro. To do his part to help participants and instructors alike, Mike created Yogacity.ca, a web site dedicated to the Ottawa yoga community. “Sport has given me so much, it’s the least I can do,” concluded Fabbro. 17435 Dr. Michael J. Brydon (RRMC RMC 1990) is a member of the board of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen. He is an Associate Professor in the Management Information Systems group in the Faculty of Business Administration at Simon Fraser University. He is also involved as a principal in several start-up firms, including Octothorpe Software. He attended both Royal Roads Military College in Victoria and the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. During his time at military college, Michael was a member of the Canadian Forces volleyball team and was named an All-Canadian in 1988 by the Canadian College Athletic Association. He graduated in 1990 from RMC with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a Queen’s Commission as an officer in the Canadian Forces. Michael remained at RMC following graduation as a lecturer and technical officer in the Department of Engineering and Management. He earned a Masters degree in Engineering following gradu ate work at Queens University and RMC. Michael received a Ph.D. in Commerce and Business Administration from the University of British Columbia in 2001. While at UBC, Michael was a fellow at the Centre for Operations Excellence and consulted with a number of firms. Michael is married to Stephanie (née McKay), a registered nurse currently working as a diabetes educator with Interior Health.
