4578 MILLER, Samuel Arthur

April 15, 1938 – September 11, 2015
Passed away September 11, 2015 in Vancouver, BC General Hospital Oncology Unit with family present. Sam was the Project Manager in charge of building UMC North, the Cancer Clinic. He fought a valiant battle against his cancer in that familiar building. Sam is survived by his wife Eileen and children Chloe (Shon), Martin (Valerie) and Patrick. He is also survived by his brother Rev. Rolland Miller (Mary Helen). Predeceased by brothers Gerhard and Walter. Extended family members include nieces and nephews Betsy, Rebecca, Matthew, Tim, Mike, Paula, Billy and Brian.
Sam was a graduate of Concordia College, Royal Roads, Royal Military College of Canada, and the Universities of Saskatchewan and Arizona (Grad School). He had a 23 year Canadian Air Force career, culminating in appointments as Air Force Chief Aeronautical Engineer and Chief Financial Officer. Sam also had 24 years experience in International Health Care at four University Medical Centres as Director, CIO or VP. In the United States he held the position of CIO and Senior VP Operations at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He also served as CIO and VP of Strategic Planning at UMC, Tucson. He was also engaged as a consultant by World Health Inc. to plan the design and construction of the International Medical Center, Beirut, Lebanon.
He was happy and content with his life and work and had retired several times, and, for fun, while posted at Moose Jaw, SK flew with the Snowbirds, Canada’s synchronized (stunt) Fly Boys Team. He was never very far from the E-Trade website. A Gathering of Friends to remember Sam is planned for later in Tucson. He will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Harold lived life to the fullest and passed peacefully supported by his wife Christiane; children Kristine (Sean) and Karl (Hollis); siblings Maurice (Claudette), Georges (Christine), Michel (Carmen), Sylvia (Bernard) and Simon-Pierre (Ginette); and many nephews and nieces.
As he dealt with the challenging moments of his failing health, Harold saw every day as a gift, all the while displaying extraordinary courage, optimism and stoicism. Harold often expressed how grateful he was to have such supportive family and friends, and how appreciative he was of the care given by those in the medical community. You are too numerous to mention by name, but you know who you are. Thank you all.
