It is with great sadness that I’ve been informed that our bud Tom Temple from 7 Sqn (Wolfe) just passed away in Sao Paolo, Brazil, from a heart attack. He and his wife Marie-Claude were about to embark on a South American holiday. Marie-Claude is making arrangements for their return to Canada.
C’est avec une grande tristesse que j’ai appris que notre camarade Tom Temple de l’ecadron 7 Wolfe vient de décéder à Sao Paolo, au Brésil, d’une crise cardiaque. Lui et sa femme Marie-Claude s’apprêtaient à embarquer pour des vacances en Amérique du Sud. Marie-Claude prend des dispositions pour leur retour au Canada.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Marie-Claude and their two daughters Catherine and Camille, and their loved ones.

4515 Mark Taylor, RRMC RMC 1959
I regret to inform you that our classmate, #4515 Mark H. D. Taylor passed away on January 14, 2023 in Victoria, BC. Mark retired as an RCN Naval Captain in 1990 and lived his retirement years in Victoria. He requested that no obituary be prepared and so, respecting his wishes, there will not be an obituary for Mark published.

À Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, le 11 janvier 2023, à l’âge de 77 ans, est décédé Monsieur Luc Laforest, époux de Madame Flore Côté. Outre son épouse, il laisse dans le deuil ses enfants Marie-Josée (Jean-Guy Campeau), François (Christina Trousquin), ses petits-enfants Charlotte Laforest, Maude Laforest-Campeau, ses sœurs Lucille, Monique, Angèle, Sylvie, Lise, ses frères feu Jacques, Marc, Michel, Jean ainsi que ses beaux-frères et belles-sœurs, neveux et nièces, parents et amis.
La famille vous accueillera au Complexe funéraire LeSieur et frère, 95 boul. Saint-Luc à Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, J2W 1E2, 450 499-7957, le dimanche 29 janvier 2023 à compter de 13 h. Une cérémonie suivra le même jour à 16 h, en la chapelle du complexe funéraire.

Prof. Roy C. Snell, BSc, MSc, PhD (1943–2023), RRMC Mathematics and Computer Science

We have the sad honour to report the death of Professor Roy C. Snell, BSc, MSc, PhD, who lectured at Royal Roads Military College from 1972 until its closure in 1995, in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science department.
Roy was an Associate Member of our Club and one of the most active of the former RRMC faculty and staff, most recently attending our November Luncheon. In recent years, he had established a particular affinity with the Victoria contingent of the RRMC Entry Class of ’72 (RRMC ’74, RMC/CMR ’76–and including two from RRMC’s first Class of ’77), as an habitual member of their regular coffee meetings, as well as his regular attendance at coffee meetings for former faculty and staff of RRMC.

Roy Snell of Victoria, BC passed away suddenly on January 23 at the age of 79 due to complications resulting from surgery.
Roy was raised near Gatineau, QC and spent his summers at a remote family cabin near Bear River, NS. After receiving his BSc and MSc at Queens, Roy went on to earn his PhD at UBC. His early career was spent teaching math and computer science at Royal Roads Military College until it closed in 1995. Rather than uprooting his family from Victoria to continue teaching, Roy transitioned to research and entrepreneurship in the Victoria tech sector. Even in retirement, he remained an avid lifelong learner and a regular volunteer at the Red Cross.
Roy enjoyed his time with friends playing games, catching up over coffee, or offering them technical support. His wife, Diane, will greatly miss her loving husband of 57 years. Roy’s sons, Mike (Wanda) and Gord (Pamela), will remember the interest and pride he took in their lives and their accomplishments. Grandchildren Graydon and Carter always looked forward to Roy’s frequent visits to Calgary, while Paisley and Lochlan loved their sleepovers and playtime with Grandpa.
A celebration of Roy’s life is being planned in the spring.
5140 James Jan Ganderton, CMR RMC Class of 1961

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Jan Ganderton, on January 28 at his home on Salt Spring Island.
Our wonderful father was a proud, generous and loving man who blessed us all with his kindness and devotion to family. He is survived by his sister Lynne and brother Fred, daughters Joni Ganderton (Steven Friedman), Diana Waterson (Brent), and son Mark Ganderton (Boni) and four grandchildren.
Jim was a wonderful grandfather, father and husband and was retired in Salt Spring, British Columbia.
James attended College Militaire Royal de Saint Jean in 1959 and Royal Military College in Kingston in 1961 (Engineering) before serving as Flight Lieutenant in the RCAF and, later as a career Diplomat (Trade Commissioner for Canadian Federal Govt) stationed in Singapore, New Zealand and USA.
He and Flo were enthusiastic boaters for many years and he served as commodore of the Salt Spring Sailing Club.
Jim had a sharp wit, a cheeky spirit and sparkling personality. He was a true gentleman and had the biggest heart. He had endless time for family and life long friends and was happiest celebrating their lives. He had the deepest love for Flo (65 years married).
The family thank Dr. Reznick and the wonderful staff at Heritage Place for their compassionate care.

I’m sad to see that Roy Snell has departed. He got me interested in computers and obscure math when I was at Roads 73-75. That interest has served me well. I am glad that I did talk with him about nine years ago to tell him that I had appreciated his guidance.

Nancy and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Ganderton, a classmate and fellow graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada. His classmates and those who knew him are grateful for having shared a bit of his life as a brother officer, colleague and friend. I promised to visit him to enjoy a cool one at the yacht club, on my many trips to Vancouver and Shawnigan Lake on the island. We were never able to match available times despite the fact that we were both long retired. Although Jim and I were in different squadrons at RMC we did manage to spend a fair bit of time together. His father commanded RCAF Station Rivers, when as an Army Aviator I completed my training on fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Jim and I shared 1937 as a birth year and it comes as no surprise that having exceeded the average life expectancy by 3 1/2 years, the frequency of our classmates passing away as increased. I am happy he had a good life and am grateful for the time that I did spend with him.
Best wishes to all family members for comfort and peace at this time and through the years ahead.

So sorry to see the passing of Doc Snell, a real fixture in my first year at RR in 1981 and till I left for RMC in 83. I had Calculus from Ontario in Grade 13 unlike many of my classmates in other provinces, so the first semester was a relative breeze…my only class like that in a the maelstrom of first year….but second semester I passed the apex of my high school comfort zone to plummet into the abyss of obscure scoring of whats a pass, whats an academic pass, whats a military staff pass…..I liked Doc Snell. Ithink we even had a trailer or mod out the back for math for a while too. Really straightforward, common sense, and a kind presence in a sea of testosterone. We were lucky to have him. My condolences to his family. Thanks for your service sir. TDV.
