5512 REES, Major Robert Edward, Ret’d (RMC 1963)

Bob died peacefully on November 3, 2009. He was predeceased by his parents, Vivian and Howard Rees (of Ottawa). He is survived by his sister, Sylvia Hawryszko (Julian), Elgin, Ont.; by nephews, Nicholas (Donna) of Ottawa and Robert (Tammy) of Red Deer, Alta., and by nieces, Christine Kurtz (David) of San Francisco and Mary Binnington (David) of Kingston, Ont. He also leaves his extended family, Michael, Alana, Alicia and Chelsie Bowers. Bob graduated from the Royal Military College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1963 and was commissioned Sub-lieutenant in the Canadian Navy where he served for 36 years. He was trained as a helicopter pilot and served on the Bonaventure, Skeena and Fraser and latterly in Shearwater Base in Dartmouth. He retired to Halifax. Bob loved sports and went by the nickname of Pee Wee, after the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball player. He played quarterback for the Royal Military College Paladins. He spent 30 years coaching Halifax minor hockey and football for both Halifax High School Warriors and the Northwest Knight Hawks. Bob also loved music, played the piano, organ and accordion and sang in a barbershop quartet. He was active for many years with the Big Brothers-Big Sisters organization and was awarded their certificate of appreciation. Visitation was Friday, November 6, with memorial service 2 p.m. Saturday, November 7, both in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, Rev. Robert Richmond officiating. In lieu of flowers.
