Chers membres du chapitre Fort-Saint-Jean:
Votre Comité exécutif a été occupé ces dernières semaines et s’attend à un été productif menant à une excellente fin de semaine des Anciens en septembre. Nous espérons que vous avez déjà réservé la date et que vos plans de déplacement et d’accommodation sont prêts pour le 11-13 septembre au Campus.
Le 1er et 2 avril, votre Comité exécutif a été fier de visiter le CMR du Canada à Kingston pour deux jours remplis d’activités et de réunions. Organisée par notre VP – activités, André Durand, et menée par notre Président Claude Tassé, le VP – exécutif Bob Benn, Secrétaire-trésorier Pierre Cadotte, VP – communications Barbara Maisonneuve, et représentant de la Vieille brigade Michel Leroux on entrepris le périple sur la 401 vers Kingston. Premièrement, un lunch a eu lieu avec le chapitre de Kingston du Club des Collèges militaires royaux du Canada. Merci à tous nos collègues du chapitre et au VP Bob Carr de nous avoir si généreusement accueilli. On a eu le temps de raconter plein d’histoires de guerre, et de renouer connaissance avec des nouveaux et anciens camarades au mess avant le lunch. Après le repas, nous avons reçu une présentation très intéressante du club de Tai Kwan Do du CMR du Canada. L’idée d’un lunch mensuel suivi d’une réunion d’affaires du chapitre semble intéressante. Si une telle activité vous serait intéressante à Saint-Jean, veuillez m’écrire à bmaisonneuve@live.ca. Nous pourrions commencer avec un lunch ou dîner et voir où cela nous mène.
Nous avons passé l’après-midi à la maison Panet où Peter Dawe a pris beaucoup de temps à nous expliquer les détails du Club. Il est très important pour nous en tant que nouveau chapitre sur le Campus du nouveau CMR de Saint-Jean de définir notre rôle vis-à-vis le Collège et nos relations avec le Club. Comme d’habitude, les idées et conseils de Peter nous seront très utiles.
Le même soir, nous avons eu le plaisir d’assister à deux pièces de théâtre, une par le Club de théâtre française et une par le Club de théatre anglaise. Les deux productions furent superbes et les acteurs, les décors et les nuances nous ont bien impressionnés; une avait un caractère typiquement québécois, et l’autre l’humour noir typiquement anglais.
Le jour suivant, nous avons effectué une tournée du site du Collège, incluant une visite à une chambre d’élof… prouvant encore une fois que les choses ont bien changées depuis notre passage dans les Collèges! M. Jean Lord, directeur du Centre des langues du CMRC nous a ensuite adressé la parole. Ce sujet important pour nous nous a permis de considérer une perspective nouvelle sur la promotion du bilinguisme et de la culture française dans un milieu anglophone.
Ces deux jours furent très utiles pour votre Comité exécutif du chapitre. Nous avons pu tisser des liens plus rapprochés avec nos collègues à Kingston, et mieux comprendre la maison Panet et le Comité exécutif du Club. Nous avons tous aussi une nouvelle perspective sur le CMRC avec ses plus de 1000 élofs.

Le 30 avril, le CMRSJ a tenu son premier dîner régimentaire annuel. Bien que le Général Walt Natynczyk, notre Chef d’état-major de la Défense, devait être notre invité d’honneur, il a du annuler à la dernière minute à la demande du Ministre. Le Commandant de l’Académie canadienne de la défense, le maj-gén Daniel Gosselin a bien voulu le remplacer à pied levé et a très bien expliqué dans ses courtes remarques des aspects différents de nos « nouvelles » Forces canadiennes. À partir de la structure de commandement jusqu’à la présence d’une grande proportion de vétérans (auxquels il a demandé de se lever), les FC ont changé, et le nombre de membres qui ont servi en opération est impressionnant. La corporation du Fort Saint-Jean a encore une fois transformé le pavillon Dextraze en une élégante salle à dîner pour l’occasion. Le repas était à la hauteur, et le nouveau Directeur-général de la corporation, le lcol(ret) Christian Mercier prenait place à notre table d’honneur pour dîner.
Le Commandant du CMR de Saint-Jean, le Col François Pion, avait gracieusement offert 50 places au dîner pour les anciens, et nous avons pu en convaincre 31 de se joindre à nous. Nous espérons que de plus en plus d’entre vous viendront participer à ces occasions très spéciales à l’avenir maintenant que le Collège est rouvert.
Les activités de fin d’année au CMRSJ ont eu lieu la fin de semaine du 22-23 mai. Quel excellent weekend! Le vendredi après-midi, les tous premiers certificats et diplômes d’études collégiales (DEC) furent remis à la première classe de finissants de 2009. M. Pierre Laviolette, dernier recteur à l’ancien CMR de Saint-Jean en 1995 fut notre invité d’honneur, et son implication dans les affaires du Collège avant et pendant sa fermeture et depuis la réouverture nous a donné une excellente idée des défis surmontés. Le Directeur des études, le lt-gén(ret) Michel Maisonneuve a présenté 91 certificats et diplômes et pour la première fois – et seulement au CMRSJ – nous avons entendu un amusant et touchant discours de fin d’année prononcé par un élof méritant de la classe de 2009, l’élof Nicolas Poirier.
La météo très coopérative a permise à la prise d’armes du 23 mai de se passer sans anicroche. L’exercice militaire fut excellent et même le sgt-maj Kelly ne pouvait cacher un léger sourire! Les nouvelles recrues de la vieille brigade furent présentées par l’adjudant Al Roberts avec leur marqueur de droite habituel, le lt-gén(ret) – et recrue – Paul Addy. Le bal des finissants du samedi soir fut une soirée remplie de plaisir et encore une fois un véritable festin fut servi par la corporation; il était simplement impossible de goûter à tout, et il fallut beaucoup de danse pour minimiser les effets des calories.
****à remarquer que les élofs n’ont pas oublié les blagues; au retour du buffet, les centres des tables d’honneur comptaient de jolis aquariums remplis de poissons rouges. Bien fait!
Ceci nous ramène donc au présent et à nos efforts pour organiser la meilleure fin de semaine des anciens jamais vue. Nous espérons voir le plus d’entre vous possible à Saint-Jean en septembre. Le Collège est rouvert et vous attend. Le tout nouveau mess des élofs, le Saint-Maurice est une super addition au Collège et en vaut le coup, autant que le musée du Fort-Saint-Jean. Prenez le weekend pour nous faire part de vos attentes pour le chapitre, pour renouer avec les camarades, pour nous aider dans les sports et pour appuyer le Club des CMR du Canada.

Dear Members of the Chapitre du Fort St-Jean:
Your executive has been busy this spring and is looking forward to a productive summer culminating in a great reunion weekend this September. We hope you have already marked the dates and have begun making your travel and accommodation plans to be with us on the Campus during the weekend of 11-13 September.
On 1 & 2 April 2009, the Executive Committee of the Club des Anciens Chapitre du Fort St Jean were fortunate enough to visit RMCC Kingston for two days of jam packed activities and meetings. Arranged by our VP Activities André Durand and led by our President, Claude Tassé, the Executive VP Bob Benn, Secretary/Treasurer Pierre Cadotte, VP Comms Barbara Maisonneuve, and Old Brigade Representative Michel Leroux, headed down the 401 to the RMC Canada at Kingston. First up was lunch with the Kingston Chapter of the RMCs Club of Canada. Many thanks to all of our colleagues from the Kingston Chapter, and to the Chapters VP Bob Carr for generously hosting us at the Senior Staff Mess. There was time for a lot of war stories and new and old comraderie in the mess before lunch. After the meal we enjoyed a presentation on the Tai Kwon Do Team RMCC which was very informative and entertaining. The idea of a monthly lunch followed by some time set aside for Chapter business seems a great idea. If any of you would be interested in attending an event like this, please let me know via e-mail at bmaisonneuve@live.ca. We could certainly start with one lunch or dinner and see how it goes.
Our afternoon was spent at Panet House where Peter Dawe spent a great deal of time with us. As a newly ordained Chapter co-located with the newly re-opened RMC SJ, we are still feeling our way around and defining both our role within the College and our niche within the Club. Insightful as always, Peter offered advise and comment that will certainly be called upon in the future.
That evening we were especially thrilled to see two theatre productions, both by the French Language Drama Club and the newly re-created English Language Drama Club. Both productions were fabulous and we were duly impressed by the cast, the sets and the nature and nuances of two plays, one most obviously created and written from a Quebecois point of view; and the other filled with British black humour.
The next day, the group was given a tour of the College, including a quick look into one of the Cadet’s rooms, which once again reminded us that this is no longer our father’s college! Following that we were addressed by Mr Jean Lord, the director of the French Language Program in Kingston. This is, naturally, a subject that is near and dear to our hearts and we were pleased to be given a fresh perspective on the promotion of bilingualism and French Canadian culture in an anglo environment.
This was an excellent two days for our executive. We were able to establish new relationships with some of our contemporaries in Kingston and to understand better the role of Panet House and the Club Executive. Also a visit to the RMCC Kingston enable us to put in perspective the College as it is today with 1000 Cadets.

On 30 Apr 09, RMC SJ hosted its first annual staff Mess Dinner. Although our guest of Honour was scheduled to be none other than our Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen Walter Natynczyk, at the last moment duty called and he was obliged to cancel his attendance at the request of the Minister of National Defence. MGen Dan Gosselin, Commander of CDA very graciously offered to step up to the plate and did a wonderful job. His speech was short and sweet – and yet he was able to touch on all aspects of the “new” Canadian Forces from its Command Structure, to the leadership of the future. His observation that the CF will soon be led by another generation of war veterans was highlighted when he asked all Afghanistan veterans in the room to stand up. The number of our servicemen and women who have already served and continue to do so is overwhelming.
The Corporation du Fort St-Jean once again transformed the Dextrase Pavillion into an elegant venue for this Mess Dinner. The food, all six courses, was delicious and the new Director-General, LCol(ret) Christian Mercier was among our head Table Guests.
The College Commandant, Col François Pion, had graciously offered the “anciens” 50 places at the dinner and we were able to sell 31 of them. We are hoping that as word spreads about the re-opened College many more of our members will take advantage of the opportunities we are given to participate in these very special College events.
The weekend of 22-23 May heralded the End of Year Ceremonies at RMC S-J. What a fabulous weekend it was. On Friday afternoon the very first CEGEP diplomas were presented to our very first finishing Class of 2009. Dr Pierre Laviolette was our Guest of Honour and his history at the College pre-closure, during closure and since re-opening give him one of the best perspectives we could hope to hear. 91 certificates were presented by the Academic Director, LGen(ret) Michel Maisonneuve and in a fresh twist, found only at RMC S-J, the Cadets themselves chose a Class of 2009 Valedictorian, OCdt Nicolas Poirier, to speak on their behalf.
The weather co-operated fully and the day of the parade dawned without chance of rain. The Cadets’ drill was truly excellent and even MWO Kelly was hard pressed to stop smiling! The new recruits of the “Old Brigade” were introduced by Adjutant Al Roberts and marched on smartly, led by their perennial Right Marker, LGen (ret) Paul Addy.
The Ball des Finissants on Saturday was a veritable feast. Once again the Corporation served a buffet that was filled with every delicacy imaginable and beyond any one person’s ability to try every dish. Lots of dancing was necessary to alleviate some of the calories.
****to note, our RMC S-J Cadets did not take long to be re-introduced and excel at the art of “the skylark” or “prank.” On returning from the buffet, the two Head Tables were greeted with goldfish now swimming in the elaborate table centrepieces. Well done!
That brings us to the present and our continued efforts to make the Reunion Weekend the best yet. We truly hope to see as many of you as possible in St Jean in September. The College is re-opened and it awaits your visit. The new Cadet Mess – St-Maurice – is a wonderful addition to the College and deserving of a look, as is the museum of Fort St-Jean. Use the weekend to tell us what you want from the Chapter, renew old acquaintances, try your hand at some of the sporting events, and support the RMCs Club of Canada.
