He was killed in action June 2 1916, aged 22, while remaining at his post as forward observing officer, where he continued to the last to direct his battery in an endeavor to protect the retiring infantry and to impede the progress of the advancing enemy.

He was killed while flying in France on Apr 28, 1917 at 22 years of age.

UPDATE 14 NOV 2014:

“The Stone Frigate, 1914″, is an unique, published record of the College in 1914, compiled by the Class that entered RMC in 1911 with 42 Recruits. After additions from earlier Classes, and deletions from within their own number over their time at RMC, 38 Gentleman Cadets graduated on 24 June, 1914.

Of the original Class, 16 were KIA, not 12 as shown in the article above. Those missing are Nos 924 van der Smissen (after whom the Award is named), 926 Maunsell (who dropped a year), 932 Crawford and 940 Bethune (neither of whom completed the three-year program).
