Director of Athletics – Darren Cates Receives Commandant’s Commendation
Darren Cates, Director of Athletics at RMCC for the past ten years is a pretty organized guy; one of his trademarks is taking care of details.
One of the main events on the Athletic Department schedule every year is the Varsity Sports Award Night. Consequently, as the AD, Darren ensures that the schedule of events for this gala event reflects the Commandants intent. This year he was totally surprised when BGen Al Meinzinger, RMCC Commandant, called him to the stage – front & centre to receive the prestigious Commandant’s Award.

In recognition of his exceptional leadership and commitment to the Royal Military College of Canada, Athletic Program.
Mr. Darren Cates
an outstanding leader, he has provided meticulous and precise oversight of the entire Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC) Athletic program for many years. Recognizing the true meaning of being a central member of the “College Team”, he consistently delivers top-notch athletic advice and guidance to the Commandant. Motivated to achieve excellence day in and day out, he inspires his Personnel Support Program team to deliver across the full spectrum of athletic activities. The success of the recent RMCC – United States Military Academy (USMA) exchange weekend is testament to his stellar leadership with a notable highpoint being the brilliant planning and execution of the historic RMCC-USMA hockey rivalry within the K-Rock Centre. Mr. Cates is an inspirational leader who brings tremendous credit to the College.

Leader remarquable, il a supervisé tout le Programme de sports du Collège militaire royal du Canada avec minutie et précision pendant de nombreuses années. Conscient de la vraie signification de son rôle de membre central de l’« Équipe du Collège », il offre constamment au Commandant des conseils et des recommandations de premier ordre en matière de sports. Déterminé à exceller jour après jour, il pousse son équipe des Programmes de soutien du personnel à se surpasser dans tout le spectre des activités sportives. Le succès de la récente fin de semaine d’échange entre le CMRC et l’United States Military Academy témoigne de son brillant leadership, l’un des points culminants de la fin de semaine ayant été la partie de hockey historique opposant le Collège militaire royal du Canada à l’United States Military Academy au centre K-Rock, événement qu’il a planifié et mis en œuvre de main de maître. M. Cates est un chef qui contribue énormément à la bonne réputation du Collège, et une source d’inspiration pour tous.

The first year Commandant also recognized the outstanding contribution to the varsity sports program by awarding a commandant’s coin to Guy Dube long time and popular varsity sports manager at RMCC.

Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC)

The proud heritage of RMC at the Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) continued this year, with travel support generously provided by the RMC Foundation. The 2014 OEC was hosted by UOIT on February 1st, and RMC sent teams for both the Junior and Senior design competitions. After a very close race for team selection, the competitors selected to represent the College were OCdts 26809 Erik McGowan, 26678 Courtney Williams, NCdts 26859 Nithya Aithal and 26694 Jordan Burkhart for the junior team, as well as OCdts 26489 Matthew Golding ,26351 Todd Bethune, 26302 Brent Kershaw, 26439 Daniel Albrecht for the senior team. The teams were made up respectively of entirely second and third year cadets.
The junior team was tasked with creating a crash protection system, allowing passengers to survive accelerations up to and including 15 g in all three axes, while the senior team had to design a remote-controlled arctic patrol robot. The senior cadets managed to overcome a plethora of technical difficulties and material faults to produce a highly-competitive design. Meanwhile, the junior cadets managed to achieve all design requirements, scoring top marks in the performance section as well as presentation section, allowing them to achieve a third place finish.
Both teams displayed a high level of professionalism and competency, networking well with their civilian peers both at the competition and in the evening socials. They might have been a small delegation, but they were hard to miss in their scarlet uniforms. In the end, many smiles were had, and the group was thankful for the opportunity to positively represent the college in an important, inter-scholastic affair.

La tradition de fierté du Collège militaire royale du Canada à la compétition génie de l’Ontario a été maintenue cette année, avec le soutien de voyage généreusement offert par la Fondation des CMR. Se déroulant à l’UOIT le 1er février, deux équipes du CMRC ont été sélectionnés et envoyés pour les compétitions de concept junior et senior. Ce premier était composé des Élofs 26809 Erik McGowan, 26678 Courtney Williams, des Aspm 26859 Nithya Aithal and 26694 Jordan Burkhart. L’équipe senior se formait des Élofs 26489 Matthew Golding, 26351 Todd Bethune, 26302 Brent Kershaw, et 26439 Daniel Albrecht. Les équipes ont été respectivement constituées des Élofs de deuxième et troisième année.
L’équipe junior devait, pour leur portion de la compétition, créer un système de protection contre un impact qui protègera les passagers à survivent des accélérations jusqu’à 15 g dans les trois axes. Cependant, l’équipe senior a dû créer un robot-exploreur capable de fonctionner dans l’arctique. L’équipe senior ont pu surmonter une pléthore de difficultés techniques et matériaux, et ont fini avec un robot fonctionnant et compétitif. Toutefois, les Êlofs juniors ont atteint tous les buts pour leur construction, ainsi qu’à la section présentation oral, qui leur a gagné 3ième position.
Les deux équipes ont démontré un haut niveau de compétence et de professionnalisme, créant plusieurs connections avec leurs camarades civils à la compétition ainsi qu’aux soirées sociaux. Ils étaient une délégation assez petite, mais quand même difficile à manquer dans leurs écarlates. En fin, les Élofs se sont beaucoup amusés à la compétition, et se considèrent chanceux d’avoir eu la chance à représenter le collège à un évènement marquant.
