Vancouver Island Ex-Cadet Club June Luncheon
On 10 June 2010 the Vancouver Island Branch held its final monthly luncheon for this season. Thanks to our very close relationship with Royal Roads University we were invited to hold the event on the Quarterdeck in the Grant Block at Royal Roads. We had an excellent turnout of members and spouses, over 100 in total. Most noticed that Royal Roads food has improved somewhat since we were cadets!
During the event, our newly elected President 9318 Dave Bindernagel (the last Commandant of RRMC,) expressed all members’ gratitude to RRU for hosting the event and then made a very appropriate and timely presentation to Karen Inkster. Karen, as many of you know, was the producer of the excellent DVD “Coming Full Circle” and has been the focal point for the growth and nourishment of the close ties between ex-cadets and the University. Dave thanked Karen for her continuing and unflagging work on our behalf and announced that by unanimous vote of our members, Karen has been made an honorary member of the Vancouver Island Ex-Cadet Club with the number VIS4. He presented her with a certificate and wished her well in her new adventure – marriage!
Karen is moving to Vancouver and is leaving her post at RRU, but with a little encouragement from our Branch, the University has decided to keep Karen working under contract to continue at least some of the projects she has been doing on our behalf. Another DVD is in the works and Karen hopes to produce more articles for E-Veritas.
As a fitting close to a very enjoyable event the Canadian Forces Snowbirds performed a beautiful flypast directly over the Castle and then swung around over the lagoon before heading for landing at Pat Bay airport. (No, we don’t get a flypast for every function but the ‘Birds were in town for the Canadian Navy Centennial celebrations and were happy to salute the former military college.)
