On October 29, 2008 at 1900 in Currie Hall, Dr Jane Boulden will deliver the Class of 1965 Teaching Excellence Award Public Lecture, entitled: “The Challenge of International Terrorism.” The event is sponsored by the RMC Club of Canada Foundation. I Remember When…

On Thursday October 17th, 2008, two RMC cadets (Ocdt’s Paish and Beatty) who had done well on their summer training were able to partake in a very special treat: The Ottawa Gunner’s Association Guest Dinner. This dinner was put on by the Ottawa Gunner’s association and featured many prominent guests such as Senator Romeo Dallaire, Lt. Gen Andrew Leslie, and the Col. Commandant of the Artillery, Brigadier-General (Ret’d) Ernest B. Beno.
It was an evening of good food, good company and most importantly of all good artillery advice and stories. It was also quite valuable because it introduced the Officer Cadets to many serving and retired artillery members. To top it all off many ex-cadets shared their college and regimental experiences which showed just how deep the ties between the college and the artillery run. Those ex-cadets in turn received an update on how the college operates today. A memorable experience for sure.

(M) Basketball team starts pre-season play at Memorial University.

RMC takes it on the chin for three games “On the Rock” – RMC freshman head coach, Scott James, learned first hand what he will be facing this year in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA). After an opening loss blow-out to the host team from Memorial University 108 – 59 – the RMC cadets went down to defeat at the hands of both Ryerson and the University of Ottawa
90 – 61 and 102 – 40.
No doubt Coach James is now set to teach tough lessons learned. The team has two exhibition games left – on the road at Brock & Bishop’s over the next two weeks. They start the regular season at home, friday 7 November against Laurier. Tip off is slated for 8 PM.

(W) Basketball off to Memorial University Too
The RMC Lady Paladins Basketball Team is en route to the Rock this weekend to take on Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in a three-game exhibition tournament. The Ladies will play at MUN on Friday night and then venture off to two local high schools for the 2nd and 3rd games. Mobile High School is the former stomping ground of II Cassandra White, so a large crowd is expected to come out and cheer on the Paladins. Afterwards, the entire team heads off to the White residence where the girls will get a taste of some down-home cooking! The tournament is a fund raiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Society for which the RMC Women’s Basketball Team has already raised $2300.

Varsity Running – Brock Open – October 18th
This past Saturday the varsity running team competed in their second last race before the OUA Cross-Country championship next week. They performed at the peak of their ability despite the debatable terrain they ran on. The combination of narrow dirt trails and tight turns made it necessary to wear spikes; however their advantage was reduced on the long gravel road section.
Overall, the team placed 5th out of 7, a good performance considering that the distances for the men and women races were 3000m and 5000m respectively. These short distances mean that the average pace was about twice that which the team has been working on this season. Whereas this previous Saturday’s race required a more individual effort from the runners because of the short distances and widths of the course, the extra 2000m for women and 5000m for men at the OUA Championship next week-end will challenge the team-level strategy.
Some members of the team started fast and hung near the front for the remainder of the race, while others got off to a slow start but moved up quickly whenever the course was wide enough to do so. The best strategy seemed to be passing as much as possible when the opportunity was given and then taking a more cautious time in the narrow rocky part of the course. Individual highlights for the two races include Eve Boyce who ran a time of 11:59, finishing 4th overall for the women. On the men’s side, Mike Spears completed the 5000m in a time of 16:30, 18th overall.

(W) Rugby – Great First Season
RMC ladies rugby team – The “ladies from RMC” are back on the rugby pitch. They are not just participating they are competing! Over the past few weeks they have played four games. In a previous e-Veritas issue we covered game one
Game two – Heavy rain fails to dampen RMC spirit
27 – 0 win over would be lawyers from across town
Despite the miserable playing conditions, the RMC Women’s Rugby Club managed to bring home their second win of the season against Queen’s Law Rugby Club. The game started with just a light sprinkle of rain- intensifying as the game progressed- but the RMC girls came out strong and fought till the very end. The first try was made by Jen Brule; after dodging past the Queen’s defence and making a run covering more than a ¼ of the pitch. The gals from Queens put up a good defence and made some strong tackles but RMC was able to skirt around them and break through numerous times. With a big push forward from the outside backs, Ashley Clouthier was able to get hold of the ball and score the second try of the game.
Seeing as it was only the second game either team had played, there were lots of penalties, which turned out well for RMC, leading to the next two tries in the 3rd quarter – scored by Ashley Clouthier (her second of the night) and RMC’s co-captain Laura Locklin. RMC continued to press on, maintaining the intensity and passion for the last 20 minute quarter. The last try was scored by Jen Brule right at the whistle (her second of the night) with an enormous effort from the entire team to get within 5 yards of the try line.
The final score was 27 – 0 for RMC!
Game three – Ladies physical in 12 – 7 win

On Wednesday, October 15 the RMC Women’s Rugby Club played the St. Lawrence Vikings for the second time on home turf. RMC opened up the scoring in the first half with a try scored by (I) Vivian Nguyen and the convert earned by (IV) Laura Locklin. The girls played a high tempo and aggressive match with tough defensive tackling from (III) Ashley Bayes, and great runs from (IV) Emily Bowen.
The Ladies carried their momentum into the second half, with another try scored by civilian player Kayla Basley. The team played a very physical game and earned their third straight victory with a final score of 12-7.
Game Four – Just a Bump in the Road – RMC Falls 27 – 0

The RMC Women’s Rugby Club played a tough game at Carleton this weekend, losing despite a great performance and effort put forth by the team. The ladies have been improving steadily this year- this game being their biggest leap yet; the women stepped up the intensity to give Carleton a highly competitive, high-tempo, aggressive match. Scrum-half, (IV) Laura Locklin and Fly-half, (III) Nicole Bach were both recognized by Carlton for having played well both being awarded with ‘man-of the match’. The ladies stepped-up their defensive game, defending well against the kicking game of Carleton; with critical catches and runs on the wings made by (IV) Emily Bowen and (III) Vanessa Durand.
This Sunday the RMC ladies will be facing Trent here at – Navy Bay Field #5 at 1 PM.

RMC sports now in high gear!

This past weekend saw a number of RMC teams competing. There are short individual write-ups on some of the teams elsewhere on this page – see above.
If you like sports, and I do, RMC is the place to be this time of year.
We had the opportunity to have a glimpse or two of some of the action: (M) soccer; & (M) volleyball who were hoting an Invitational tournament of the weekend. One of their VB match victories was over West Point. We also watched the early minutes of the Women’s soccer match against Ryerson before family commitments pulled us away.
The hockey team was on the road and dropped two close games at Guelph and Brock. Both rugby teams played; the women competed in a “friendly” at Carleton and men played across town against Queen’s University.The scores from (W) Volleyball were very respectable to start their OUA season.
RMC fencers garnered four bronze medals at the Queen’s Invitational.
24934 Eric Castellani and Becca Walker (War Studies) placed third in men’s and women’s foil, 24424 Brendan Kilburn was third in men’s epee, 24052 Sarah Rogers also earned a bronze in women’s sabre.
The taekwondo team competed in Ajax Ontario this past weekend with great success. When the tournament was finished RMC required an extra vehicle just to transport all the medals that they had won.
Tyler Billings II, Bilal Hasanzadah I, Josee Belcourt II and Nalae Yang II won gold medals with Minh Ngo I and Zaneta Balasova I both winning silver. Yang also won a second gold medal in Women’s patterns.
RMC team captain, Nirmalan Jeganathan IV, took the gold in the men’s fin weight category. Officer cadet Suhan Kwon II also took gold in the men’s master black belt pattern division as well.
We had the opportunity to bump into 25490 (I Year) Andrew Sheahan – 6 Squadron – who had his camera on-hand and “clicking away” at both the Fencing tournament and the (M) volleyball match against Ottawa University.
Below we have included some of Andrew’s highly professional level work. I’m sure you will agree with me, he does a great job capturing the play-by-play action. He has promised to provide e-Veritas with a steady supply of photos of cadets at various games and events – not just sports – during the school year.
We appreciate the support and cooperation and from Andrew. It is efforts such as his which will guarantee e-Veritas will be able to provide our readers with a reality view of what’s happening at RMC.
