Retired Queen’s University historian Geoff Smith, a former Californian, says Kingston should invite the plain-talking, moose-hunting vice-presidential nominee to visit the home of her ancestors, maybe show her the local rifle range and give her a tour of Royal Military College and CFB Kingston. The Palin connection is a good excuse for Kingston to do some aggressive self-promotion, Smith says. Just knowing her great-great-grandfather was born here has made him sleep better.

The Canada Post Office commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the year in which Lieut.-Col. John McCrae died. A poet and medical doctor, McCrae achieved fame with “In Flanders Fields”. Probably the most frequently quoted poem written by a Canadian.

Global program to honour Korean War Fallen

The time is coming once again to Turn Toward Busan and pay tribute to our Fallen Comrades who rest there in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery and elsewhere in Korea and Japan and those who were committed to the sea. This year, 40 bereaved family members of the Fallen from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the US and UK will be guests of the MPVA and they will be on site at the UN Cemetery on November 11. The coordinates for the UN Cemetery are Lat North 35 deg 08 min Lon East 129 deg 06 min. Using that bearing the correct angle for facing toward Busan can be established well in advance of the ceremony date.
Last year Veterans groups in Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia held such special services, either on November 10 or November 11. The National Capital Unit of KVA Canada held a Turn Toward Busan service at 9pm on September 10, which corresponded with the Korean time of 11 am, November 11. Planned and managed by Unit President Bill Black, the Ottawa ceremony was participated in by Veterans Affairs Minister GregThompson and other dignitaries and more than a platoon of Korean War Veterans. Some Veterans even drove in from the Montreal area to take part. The KVA Ottawa ceremony was covered by CBC television. The footage was used in the November 11 National Remembrance Day coverage next day and broadcast by CBC to every community in Canada.
