This Women’s History Month, eVeritas recognizes Rear-Admiral (Ret’d) The Honourable Rebecca Patterson, OMM, MSM, CD a trailblazing military leader, registered nurse and senator whose career reflects a lifelong commitment to service.

Patterson joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a critical care Nursing Officer in 1989. Over 34 years, she progressed from providing direct patient care to leading military healthcare delivery, education, training and strategic planning in Canada and abroad. She became the first person with a military nursing background to lead at the rank of Flag Officer in Canada.

Her operational experience began with Operation SCALPEL during the Persian Gulf conflict in 1991, when she deployed to Saudi Arabia with 1 Canadian Field Hospital. In 1993, she served in Somalia on Operation DELIVERANCE in support of the Canadian Airborne Regiment. Nearly two decades later, she deployed to Kabul on Operation ATTENTION with the NATO Training Mission–Afghanistan. There, she led a multinational team that helped the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police re-establish their medical education and training system.

These missions demonstrate the scope of her leadership: caring for people in demanding environments, strengthening healthcare systems and building the capabilities of those around her.

At home, Patterson assumed increasingly senior responsibilities. As Commander of 1 Health Services Group, she oversaw healthcare support for CAF personnel across Western and Northern Canada. She later served as Deputy Commander of the Canadian Forces Health Services Group and as Director General of the Canadian Armed Forces Strategic Response Team–Sexual Misconduct.

As Defence Champion for Women, Patterson helped advance culture change, address harmful behaviour and build healthier, more inclusive workplaces. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she commanded the Canadian Forces Health Services—Canada’s 14th health system—at a time of extraordinary operational pressure. Throughout these appointments, her leadership remained grounded in compassion, accountability and service.

Her contributions have earned significant recognition. She received the Meritorious Service Medal in 2014 and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Military Merit in 2018. Her honours also include the Ontario Premier’s Award for Excellence in Health Sciences for Ontario College Graduates and the Niagara College Distinguished Alumni Award.

Today, Patterson continues her public service in the Senate of Canada. As the first woman who is a CAF veteran to be appointed to the Senate, she brings a distinctive combination of frontline nursing experience, senior military leadership and healthcare expertise to Parliament. Her Senate work continues the priorities that have shaped her career: supporting CAF members, veterans and military families; strengthening healthcare; championing women’s leadership; and helping institutions better serve Canadians.

From military hospitals and international missions to senior command and the Senate chamber, Rear-Admiral (Ret’d) The Honourable Rebecca Patterson has consistently led with courage and care. Her journey reminds us that meaningful leadership is measured not only by rank or title, but by the people supported, the systems strengthened and the trust earned along the way.

This Women’s History Month, eVeritas proudly celebrates her remarkable legacy, and her continuing example of service and leadership.
