Canada’s Air Force – Celebrating 100 years of Flight
The year 2009 marks the 100th anniversary of the first powered, heavier-than-air, controlled flight in Canada by J.A.D. McCurdy in the Silver Dart. The first flight of the Silver Dart took place on 23 February 1909, from the frozen waters of the Bras d’Or Lake in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Later that year, the aircraft made its first flight at a military location at Camp Petawawa, Ontario. In 2009 the Air Force will hold a number of activities and events that will commemorate the centennial of flight and pay tribute to the countless outstanding accomplishments in military aviation over the last 100 years. Join the Air Force as it celebrates the anniversary of the first flight at the National Defence Headquarters concourse. An NCR Canadian Centennial of Flight (Air Force) commemorative event will be held Monday, 23 February 2009, in the NDHQ main Concourse at 1000 hrs. Major-General André Deschamps, Assistant Chief of the Air Staff will say a few words to acknowledge the significant military aviation contributions. A Centennial of Flight kiosk with flight simulator will be on display in the main concourse that will feature an interactive flight simulator. Promotional items will be handed out. Refreshments will be served, starting at 10:30 am followed by a musical performance by the Central Band Pipes and Drums, Brass Quintet and the Jazz Group.
