RMCC Cadets Thanked by The Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative

By: WJO

The use of child soldiers remains a large, international problem. A recent 60 Minutes program reported on efforts to stop the use of child soldiers in Africa. Here in Canada, The Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative has been hard at work for many years in bringing attention to the problem and trying to stop it. Now, the Dalhousie-based group is thanking RMC cadets for boosting efforts through a scholarship program for youth affected by armed conflict and/or students studying the issues.

The scholarship is the result of the 2012 Kilimanjaro journey by ten cadets, organized and led by then III Year, OCdt Anthony Matlock and now 2Lt Eric Robb. The mission spearheaded expeditions for adventure training, cultural awareness and learning opportunities abroad. Part of the challenge also saw the team fund raise $20,000 in outside support toward the establishment of the scholarship. Details of the 2013 recipients have just been announced on this Dallaire Child Soldier Scholarship website, noting thanks to RMC cadets. Background of the Kilimajaro leadership training experience appear in this past eVertas article and this Globe and Mail article.
