Biography
David Law is a Canadian security and governance practitioner with over three decades of experience in the field. In addition to writing and teaching on a wide range of security governance issues, David has undertaken consultancy assignments in more than 40 countries around the world. He has also worked at the NATO Political Directorate, where in his last position he was the first Head of its Policy Planning Unit, and at the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, where he was Senior Fellow as well as Senior Advisor for its International Security Sector Advisory Team.
Presently, David is Senior Associate with the Security Governance Group or SGG – a private research consultancy firm headquartered in Kitchener, Canada that specialises in statebuilding, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction. In this capacity, David has participated in a number of projects, including for Transparency International, the German Armed Forces Command and Staff College, and the Ukrainian National Defence University.
In addition, David is Senior Fellow with the SGG’s sister organization – a newly established non-profit think tank called the Centre for Security Governance or CSG, whose research program is dedicated to the study of security governance and security sector reform in fragile, failed and conflict-affected states. In this capacity, David has participated in a number of CSG eSeminar events, covering topics ranging from Libya to cyber security.
David is a frequent blog contributor to one of the CSG’s main initiatives, the SSR Resource Centre, which provides a research and information hub on security sector reform issues. His latest full-length publication is a co-authored paper on security sector reform in the Central African Republic, published as the first issue of the CSG’s flagship publication, the SSR 2.0 Brief.
