La fin de semaine des Anciens au CMR, a été tenue les 22 et 23 août et s’est avérée un grand moment de retrouvailles pour tous. Cette occasion coïncide avec la reconnaissance des recrues au CMR qui deviennent des élof et les aspirants de la marine recrues en de vrais Préparatoires. Par exception cette année, il n’y avait pas de Juniors dans les rangs. Les recrues, après avoir passé un mois à l’École de leadership et de recrues de la garnison St-Jean, ont été accueillis au CMR par les Anciens lors de l’ouverture de la grande barrière au nord des logements familiaux et ce, au début du mois d’août.
Les Anciens ont répondu en grand nombre pour se retrouver à l’Alma Mater et se retremper dans l’atmosphère tant festive que traditionnelle du CMR.
La température a été idéale pendant les deux jours des festivités, du soleil pas trop écrasant avec des nuages et un bon vent. Quelque 200 Anciens (et leur épouses) se sont réunis au DMCV (TGIF) le vendredi au Grand Fort et plus d’une centaine convives ont assisté au souper de la Vieille brigade du samedi soir au Vieux Mess. La participation cette année a encore dépassé les attentes du Comité organisateur du Chapitre, tout comme en 2024.
La Classe de 1975 s’est d’abord réunie sous le Grand Chapiteau à l’extérieur du pavillon Dextraze lors du TGIF. Ils se sont remémoré les bons (et moins bons moments) d’antan, tout en s’esclaffant devant les affres du temps sur chacun. Ils se sont partagé un médaillon commémoratif pour célébrer leur 50e anniversaire d’entrée au CMR. Ils ont fièrement marché à l’entrée du Grand Fort au son perçant de la cornemuse de l’élof Hudson Ratté. En même temps, une présentation sur Powerpoint nous rappelait leur look de 1975-1980 et ce qu’ils étaient devenus aujourd’hui. Ils ont suivi la tradition initiée par les Vieux 18 (the Old 18) pour se présenter à l’auditoire sur l’estrade à l’avant (donnant leur nom, leur numéro de Collège et un point fort lors de leur séjour au CMR).
Pour commenter l’occasion avec panache, M Peter Avis, l’Adjudant de la Vieille Brigade à RMC, nous a dévoilé le trophée ‘Loving Cup’, donné au RMC par ces mêmes Vieux 18 en 1907. Un toast a été lancé à la santé de la Classe de 1975 et M Steve Woodland, leur Major de Classe, s’y est trempé les lèvres. Il est notable d’indiquer que Steve est aussi le Secrétaire de la Classe de 1980 au RMC.
La Classe de 1975 a donc été officieusement reçue à la Vieille Brigade du CMR. De plus, des toasts à la santé aux Classes 1970, 1980, 1985 et 1990 ont été lancés, pour souhaiter une longue vie et de la prospérité à ceux qui célébraient leur multiple de 5 ans. Nous avons aussi eu le privilège de célébrer la présence de M Jacques Petit, notre doyen de la Classe 1952. La Classe de 1965 a préféré entamer une grosse semaine de festivités deux semaines plus tard au début septembre, pour visiter le CMR le 9 septembre et se diriger ensemble aux Retrouvailles à RMC, la fin de semaine suivante.
Le lendemain dès 08h40, la course à obstacle des recrues débutait en toute fébrilité. Tôt dans le parcours, ils étaient confrontés au mur des Anciens, tout juste à côté du Corps de garde et du Musée. Parents et amis pouvaient assister pour voir leurs petites ou petits s’efforcer pour gagner la course. Et c’est vers 11h15 que le nouveau Directeur de cadets, le Lcol Noël, a annoncé que l’escadron Jolliet avait réussi le meilleur parcours aux obstacles.
Un moment clé des retrouvailles a été sans l’ombre d’un doute quand les Anciens de la Classe 75 ont paradé devant parents et amis pour être officiellement intronisés à la Vieille Brigade. Ils ont reçu trois Hourrahs de la part de l’escadre et ils ont pu remettre le fameux médaillon avec le numéro de Collège et le nom de chaque recrue, qui est devenu un Prep. La Classe de 1975 a été généreuse et a remis un don de $21K à la Fondation, ce qui aidera à poursuivre la tenue des activités consacrées aux élof. Avant la parade, selon une tradition suggérée par la Classe de 1970, un circuit commémoratif a été marché par la Classe de 1975 autour du carré de parade. Inutile de dire que le tempo était tout à fait complaisant.
Les Anciens se sont rassemblés en deux pelotons à la fin de la parade pour marcher au pas cadencé jusqu’au Monument des Anciens. La Classe de 1975, à l’honneur, se trouvait d’abord au-devant, suivie des autres Anciens. L’Adjudant de la Vieille brigade de RMC, M Peter Avis, a assuré les arrières. Tous ont fièrement fait une tête à droite à l’officier réviseur et le Commandant du CMR, le Col Tremblay, qui les attendait devant le Mess St-Maurice. Ils ont participé par la suite à la traditionnelle photo de famille avec l’escadre entière.
La journée s’est clôturée sur un somptueux repas au Vieux Mess qui a été fort apprécié, entre autres pour l’opportunité de profiter du patio dans un décor pittoresque. Encore une fois la présentation sur Powerpoint de la Classe de 1975 jouait en arrière-plan. De manière exceptionnelle, 16 élof ont cassé la croûte avec les Anciens. Une belle soirée amicale où les histoires de guerre volaient de partout.
Les amis de la Classe de 1975, la plupart qui ne s’étaient pas vu depuis 45 ans ont donc pu se retrouver. Les participants ont été bien heureux du déroulement et des activités. Les retrouvailles de 2025 ont été un franc succès. Faisons place maintenant à la Classe de 1976 qui déjà se prépare avec effervescence.

Homecoming Reunion Weekend at RMCSJ
The Homecoming Reunion at CMRSJ was held on August 22 and 23 and it proved to be a great gathering for all. This occasion coincided with the recognition of the recruits at RMCSJ who became, after their recruit camp, true Preparatory OCdts. Exceptionally this year, there were no Juniors in the ranks. The recruits, after having spent a month at the St-Jean Garrison Leadership and Recruit School, were welcomed at RMCSJ by the Alumni at the opening of the great north gates, next to the Married Quarters, in early August.
The Alumni responded in large numbers to meet at the Alma Mater and re-immersed themselves in both the festive and traditional atmosphere of the RMCSJ.
The weather was ideal during the two days of festivities, not too much beating sun, with added clouds and a good wind. Some 200 Alumni (and their wives) gathered at the TGIF on Friday at the Grand Fort and over 100 guests attended the Saturday evening Old Brigade Supper at the ‘Vieux mess’. The participation this year again exceeded expectations of the organizing committee of the Branch, just as in 2024.
The Class of 1975 first gathered under the Big Top outside the Dextraze pavilion upon arrival at the TGIF. They reminisced about the good (and not so good) moments of yesteryear, while laughing at the ravages of time on everyone. They shared a commemorative medallion to celebrate their 50th anniversary of joining RMCSJ. At 18h00, they proudly walked through the entrance of the Grand Fort, to the piercing sound of the bagpipes played by OCdt Hudson Ratté. At the same time, a PowerPoint presentation reminded us of their look from 1975-1980 and what they had become today. They followed the tradition, initiated by the Old 18 to present themselves to the audience on the stage at the front (giving their name, their college number and a highlight during their stay at RMCSJ).
To set the occasion with panache, Mr. Peter Avis, the Adjutant of the Old Brigade at RMC, unveiled the ‘Loving Cup’ given to RMC by these same Old 18 in 1907. A toast was then called for the Old 18 and to the health of the Class of 1975. Mr. Steve Woodland, their Class Major, drank from the cup. It is noteworthy to indicate that Steve is also the Class Secretary of the 1980 Class at RMC.
The Class of 1975 was, at that point, unofficially received into the Old Brigade of RMCSJ. In addition, there were also toasts to the good health at the Classes of 1970, 1980, 1985 and 1990, wishing them all a long life and prosperity, as they celebrated their multiple of 5 years. We also had the privilege of celebrating the presence of Mr. Jacques Petit, our dean of the Class of 1952. The 1965 class preferred to start a big week of festivities at the beginning of September, some two weeks later, to visit RMCSJ on September 9th and then travelling together to the Homecoming Reunion at RMC the following weekend.
The next day at 08:40, the Obstacle Course for the recruits began in earnest. Early on during the course, they were confronted with the Ex-Cadet wall, right next to the Guardhouse and the Museum. Parents and friends could attend to see their little ones strive to win the race. And it was around 11:15 when the new Director of Cdts, LCol Noël, announced that Jolliet Squadron had successfully completed the best time on the Obstacle Course.
A key moment in the reunion was without a doubt when the Class of 1975 Alumni marched onto the Cadet Wing parade, before family and friends, to be officially inducted into the Old Brigade. They received three Hurrahs from the Wing and were able to present the Preps with their badges and the famous medallions with the College number and the name of each Prep. The Class of 1975 was generous and donated $21K to the RMCSJ’s Foundation, which will help continue holding activities dedicated to the OCdts. Before the parade, a tradition, suggested by the class of 1970, a commemorative circuit was walked by the Class of 1975 around the parade square. Needless to say, the tempo was quite relaxed with much talking.
The Alumni gathered in two platoons at the end of the parade to march to the Ex-Cadet Monument. Up front figured the Class of 1975, followed by the remaining Alumni. The Adjutant of the Old Brigade of RMC, Mr. Peter Avis, assured the rear. All proudly gave an Eyes Right to the reviewing officer, Col Tremblay, who was waiting for them in front of the St-Maurice Mess. They then participated in the traditional family photo with the entire squadron. A moment of silence was requested by the CWC, OCdt Lajoie.
The day ended with a sumptuous meal at the ‘Vieux Mess’, which was greatly appreciated, including the opportunity to enjoy the patio in a picturesque setting. Once again, the PowerPoint presentation of the Class of 1975 was played in the background. Exceptionally, 16 OCdts shared the meal with the Alumni, truly a beautiful evening where war stories flew from everywhere.
Friends of the Class of 1975, most of whom had not seen each other for 45 years were able to meet and catch up. The participants were very happy with the weekend events and the activities. The 2025 Homecoming Reunion was a complete success. Let’s now make way for the Class of 1976, which is already feverishly preparing for next year.
