Expedition club – Peru 2014

On the 13th of December 2014, after two weeks of exams, 8 Ocdts from RMC left Toronto for Lima, the capital of Peru. The goal of their expedition: hike the Santa Cruz Trek starting from Vaqueria, cross the Punta Union Pass at 4750m of altitude, and reach Cashapampa, for a total trek of 45 km. Planning to accomplish this trek in 4 days, the team surprised themselves and finished it in an impressive 3 days! Here is a summary, day by day, of their travel through Peruvian mountains:

13 Dec: Departure from Toronto International airport at 1900hrs to Miami, and then to Lima, Peru. Arrival at Lima airport early the next morning.

14 Dec: The team arrives in Lima in the morning, then takes a bus for an 8 hour long ride that takes them to Huaraz, where all the hikers meet. The Cadets finally arrive at the hostel after 32 hours of travelling.

15 Dec: Preparation day for the hikes they will do in the next 5 days. The team members walk around the city to gather equipment (food, fuel, etc.) and discover Peruvian culture. They find a public gym where a senior female volleyball team is playing and join them to play a couple games. Lots of fun with the local people, but the expedition continues and the team is finally ready for the first one-day hike the next morning.

16 Dec: The Ocdts leave the hostel at 5h45 to start their first hike of the expedition at Mount Churup. This hike is to help them acclimatize their bodies to the high altitude and lack of oxygen while climbing. After 3 hours of hiking and rock climbing the side of a waterfall, they finally reach Laguna Churup at 4450m, a small turquoise lake surrounded by giant mountains covered in snow. After enjoying the view for a moment, the team goes back down the mountain and to Huaraz.

17 Dec: Departure for the Huascarán National Park early in the morning. After a 4 hour drive, they start their journey through the park at Vaqueria. After approximately 10km of hiking, they settle their camp for the night. The sight is beautiful and cows visit them during the evening.

18 Dec: Second day of the hike, the toughest one: all morning the cadets climb non-stop a trail full of rocks and mud, up to the Punta Union Pass, a small gap in a giant wall of stone between two mountains at 4750m. They finally reach it early in the afternoon, have a quick lunch and take pictures. Breathing is hard at this altitude due to the lack of oxygen in the air. The team goes down on the other side and camp in the valley. The hardest part is behind them.

19 Dec: Last day on the Santa Cruz trek, the cadets hike through 26 km of rocks, landslides and streams. They finally arrive in Cashapampa at last light, where the local population welcomes them. The camp is set for their last night in the mountains.

20 Dec: The cadets take the bus back to Huaraz. They spend the afternoon and evening exploring the city and appreciate Peruvian culture.

21 Dec: The team leaves Huaraz to go back to Lima for one last day before going back to Canada.

22 Dec: The day is spent exploring Lima. Departure of the team from Lima to Miami.

23 Dec: The OCdts fly from Miami to Toronto where a van picks them up to bring them back to RMC. End of the Peru 2014 expedition.

These 8 Ocdts experienced a once-in-a-lifetime experience that challenged their leadership skills, their patience and their determination during this 10 day trip. Their preparation before and during the trip helped them succeed without a single problem, and reach their goal: completing the Santa Cruz trek. It is important to mention the generous contribution of the RMC Foundation to the Peru 2014 expedition. So from the Peru 2014 team, thank you, it would not have been possible without your support.

Congratulations to the Peru 2014 team for the success of their expedition!
