Upon promotion to Major in 1995, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment as Officer Commanding G Company, leading them as part of the Queen’s Royal Hussars Battle Group on the initial NATO mission in Bosnia.
He began his career as an Army officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. He served his country with pride and professionalism for 20 years and retired at the senior rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. After working as a Project Manager in the high tech sector, he started his own project management company.
He attended both Royal Roads Military College in Victoria and Royal Military College in Kingston, graduating in 1978, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English.
His operational deployments include Cyprus (1987), Bosnia-Herzegovina (1996) and Afghanistan (2004 and 2009).
In July 2004, he was selected to attend the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island as a member of the Naval Command College Class of 2005, while also completing a Master’s degree in International Relations at Salve Regina University.
Called to the Senate by Governor-General Clarkson upon the recommendation of the Rt. Honourable Jean Chrétien, he represents the province of New Brunswick and the Senatorial Division of Saint John-Kennebecasis. He has served in the Senate of Canada since October 4, 2001.
After completing a three-year command tour, and 33 years of service, he retired from the Canadian Forces in August 2008 and re-enrolled as a Reservist.
He is considered a new breed of modern day operational military leader with a business administration degree who speaks the language of values, loyalty and humility. While he believes goal #1 is mission success, he knows you cannot achieve a mission without caring for your team and ensuring they have all the tools to do their job effectively.
In 2011, he was awarded the Vimy Award for his contributions to Canadian defence and security.
In the summer of 2010, he became the Commandant of Canadian Forces Support Unit (Ottawa) which meant he was the base commander of the National Capital Region and controlled all administration and logistical services for the nearly 20,000 military and civilian members of the Defence Team.
He has served in many locations across Canada including Gander, Newfoundland, Kingston, Ontario, Montreal, Quebec and Ottawa, Ontario. Overseas deployments have included a total of 21 months in the Balkans in Croatia (UNPROFOR) and Bosnia (IFOR and SFOR), as Brigade and later Divisional Intelligence Officer.
He has held a variety of staff assignments. He has served as both the G3 and Chief of Staff of Land Force Western Area, and has undertaken a number of positions at National Defence Headquarters including the J3 Operations desk officer responsible for Canada’s military commitment to the Former Yugoslavia, a posting as Director General Military Engineering/Chief Military Engineer, and a posting to the Privy Council Office where he was employed as the Senior Defence Advisor and Director of Operations for the Foreign and Defence Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister.
